Took the boat out for the first time this season after leaving it in the water this winter. I know the bottom needs cleaned & is contributing to the issue, will have done when we get back this weekend. I called my mechanic and he said the dirty bottom was the big contributor & was overloading the engines? We stopped and topped of the diesel, quarter tank each, soon as we cleared the channel took up wide open (2800 rpm) for about five minutes, temps and oil pressure good (180/50), then backed down to 2200 rpm. The best we could do was 11 kt with the full load. I have only had the boat for 3 yrs and still learning, the best we have been able to do was 22 kts last season. I also noticed the starboard was sooting heavier than the port side, and could see gray smoke coming from the exhaust port. This make me think that there may be other issues going on here? Also had lite sooting towards the end of the the season last year when the bottom pretty clean.
Some history, had the engines flushed & props tuned do to overheating issues last season. Engines sound fine and are experiencing any vibration issues. There are 1200 hrs on the engines. When they were doing that work the mechanic told me the racors & air eparators all looked good. I am still trying figure out this overloading the engine thing, for some reason it just not clicking with me.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks
