Hi Guys

Looking for some help here....

So was prepping my boat (2008 Searay 185 Sport ) to winterize it today heres the procedure I’ve used for the last two years with no issues:

· Drain the block down removing all 5 blue plugs
· Reinsert the drain plugs
· Fill a tub with 30 litres of anti freeze
· Lower the out drive into the tub
· Hook ear muffs up to a submersible pump
· Drop pump into the tube and let it start pumping
· Then fire the engine up

Did a trail run today…. All steps same as the above only with clean water….. left it running for a while approx. 5-8 mins then started to notice a lot of steam/exhaust fumes….but still was spitting out water left and right. The pump was running all the time so it had a constant flow to the muffs.

Didn’t overheat but did get up to the operating temperature of 170…..

I’ve attached a video below of it just before I shut the engine off….. does this look normal??

Just one thing thats different from the last two years.... the tub is abit smaller and the exhaust outlet in the prop is restricted more so that before.... so could it be backing up and coming out left and right?? if this is the case is this ok?

Drain the block down removing all 5 blue plugs
· Reinsert the drain plugs

Remove the large hose from the T stat housing
Pour AF in hose untill it comes out the housing
Reattach hose
Remove hoses from T housing that go to the bottom of the manifolds
pour 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon in each one
Leave drive in the down position. ( lower completely, then hit the up button to release the down pressure)
Remove batteries and cover
Go get a beer and relax

^^^ mine is similar but I run your oat several times with fresh after and oopen the blue plugs several times to run a wire inside to make sure I get very last piece of sand or debris out, there is always always another little something in here. then I do the above. I have a heavy duty submersible pump but would never trust it with my motor on muffs.
6 gallons does both motors and my fresh water system on board.

Watching your video, it looks like there is no water circulation. You say water was "spitting" out the sides but I don't see any. On mine, at idle, the water is pouring out of the exhaust side ports.
I don't get this pump onto the muffs. Just because the pump was running, doesn't mean it was working. Muffs, pump and then drop in a bucket, just seems like a lot of room for error. Personally, I never use muffs. I have a tub similar to what you are using, but it's deep enough to cover the intake ports for the water pump. Actually the leg is submersed to the bottom of the cavitation plate. That way it's impossible for it to run out of water.
I'm a believer in the AF pour method. As Bt Doctur listed above, drain the water from the block and lines, pull the hoses off the thermostat housing, and pour antifreeze into each hose till it runs onto the floor. The only thing I do extra is don't reinstall the drain plug/line until AF comes out. Very easy to do and guaranteed to cover all internals.

I'm not helpful at all by asking this, but why not the tub OR the ear-muffs? Why both? Just curious.

How many hours on the impeller?

Never used the muffs on the I/O, used the t-stat method mentioned above. Easier, quicker, and no need to run the motor at all.

hi again guys....

apologies about the quality of the video loaned my gopro to someone so had to use my phone.... just to answer a few questions:

1) water was coming out of the two exhaust ports and the propeller opening.... however the starboard port flow is less that the port side but this was always the case for the last 3 years.

2) The impeller has about 15 hours on it ... was replaced last season.

3) Why the tub and the pump? I do this so i can catch the anti freeze and recirculate it so i can reuse the anti freeze again next year.

In my video i was just testing with clean water before using the anti freeze.... so i setup things again yesterday i notice before the boat was not on level ground so i leveled it up.

Using the same steps i listed in my first post but with 30 litres of anti freeze in the tub this time.... i left it running for 8-10mins... the anti freeze flowed from both exhaust ports again and there was also steam/fumes.

The engine came up to 170 and held steady at this temperature..... i drained the block down again removing all 5 blue plugs.... and pink anti freeze came from all drain points.

The outside temperature was 8 °C (46 °F) in the video the exhaust fumes and anti freeze was hitting cool air this might explain what i was seeing???

To be honest i dont know which pipes to disconnect to use the pour method so maybe next year ill try that method

Cheers for the help guys
