some interesting iphone developements

Boy that's a change up. Yesterday you were comparing the iPhone to a Newton and Jobs as the anti-Christ. I think you may have actually taken a look at the video of the SDK.

Gee Dave, go learn how to actually read what people post before you start bullshi**ing yourself about "trust".

Guess my attempt at irony was a little too subtle. :) You were bashing an entire product and two companies because it doesn't serve YOU well in YOUR area, remember? Thats a bit too generalistic for us fan boys to absorb into our thick skulls.

I use my iphone for probably 80% data (not much for chit chat). It works great, even with "2.5G" data speeds. Yes, I wish it were faster. But I can use it faster than I could my 3G berry, which was great for email and text, worthless for web use.

So, let me see who is to blame here..... AT&T for trying to secure exclusive rights to a cool new product? Or do you blame Apple for trying to maximize shareholder value by entering into a lucrative financial deal with AT&T?

Apple does what they believe is best for their shareholders, AT&T does as well. That may not be whats best for YOU, but that doesn't mean it wasn't what is best for them.

It makes perfect sense to me that AT&T (really, SBC, PacTel, Ameritech, and now BellSouth) and Verizon (Nynex, BellAtlantic) have regional strengths given their legacy.

Mmmm, no. Jobs is still the anti-christ and I've no desire to be stuck selling software exclusively through Apple's iTunes store in order to use it on my phone. I got burned by their sorry asses developing for the Newton, I have no desire to put up with their nonsense ever again. But none of that matters because the coverage stinks where I'd need it.

I just want to know what kind of boat you have:huh: Rinker??

And, is it large enough to install a tower on? Like a REALLY tall tuna tower, but not for spotting game fish, but rather cell phone retransmissions?

Can your genset handle a large microwave repeater and a rack of switches?

Don't want to get anyone excited yet but I have an idea.

It's ok, just admit you are making things up as you go along. You'll feel better, like a weight has been lifted. I'm not sure who you are trying to wow here. You jump from thread to thread regurgitating "knowledge" that is obvious you haven't digested yet.

Wow!

Richard....I am losing control....help :huh:sit:huh:play nice:huh:quiet:huh:if you can't say something nice....:huh:can't we all get along:huh:stop picking on each other.

I don't have a dog in this fight, at least until our corporate IT group allows us to get email push via iphone...

I do have an AT&T wireless card (using it now at the Indianapolis airport) and an AT&T blackberry, and I travel weekly. I think the service is outstanding! Oh, and on my boat (Great Lakes) the service is fantastic.

I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, but Bill K, what kind of boat DO you have? You should answer that question so others will know!

(Oh, and yes, i realize my antenna is not perfectly vertical in this picture. I said 7 our fathers, 5 hail mary's and will be picking up litter on the highway on memorial day and labor day weekends. My apologies!) :)

I was at a talk once where one of the CEO's of Research in Motion (BlackBerry guys) said "The best wireless application is one that uses the network the least."... or something like that. Most "developers" don't know how to build good wireless/mobile applications. It's very different than doing something for a desktop machine, especially web based, that essentially always has a network connection and you don't have to worry about going into an elevator or on the water and losing that connection. I sure hope you don't need a network connection to use a charting program...

Who knows... maybe the fact AT&T has poor coverage in some spots will make the rich on-device applications and the iphone shine. Maybe Apple knew this....

But then we have someone here who knows you can't store anything local on an iPhone, experienced at the Newton, and knows Steve Jobs is the root of all evil...

Well. . . for a good charting device. . .what do you really need? Memory, processor, GPS chip and a screen.

I think the iPhone has all but the GPS chip today. It certainly has better memory, processor and screen than my old Garmin GPS III+.

So *can* this device do chart plotting? I am sure it can. In my mind, the only problem with the iPhone in this service is the screen. The screen is too small for this function. I have a friend who uses a PDA chartplotter -> and everyone makes fun of him when he puts on his reading glasses to use it.

I used my old GPS III+ on my SeaRay for my first season. It did what I wanted it to do just fine: Gave me speed. Gave me bread crumb trails. I had charts loaded in and all. But the screen was TOO SMALL. The primary driver for me to get a big-boy chartplotter was simply to get a LARGE and LEGIBLE screen.

I think I saw pictures of the Four Suns electronics: I think *that* is the way to go.

Now as a backup, I am sure an iPhone can work. Just as long as I don't have to pay too much for it. But in truth. . . .I personally use paper charts as my backup. That eliminates "power" as a common mode failure point.

I am with you Frank....WOW !!!...You guys are on a roll keep it up....he will break soon and then.....we will know what kind of boat he really has....suspense is killing me

. . . . deleted because this post was about GPS and iPhones and was thus off topic. . . .

Nice boat.
Not a Sea Ray, unless there is some dark Brunswick-Genmar (?) thing going on.
One can only wonder why our lone Four Winns captain is so hesitant to properly complete his signature block.
IBs? IOs? 5.7s? 6.2s? 8.1s? Mercs? Volvos?
So--we now have represented here Bayliner, Tiara, Four Winns, and Regal, in addition to the Sea Ray line. Any manufacturers I am missing?
In the interest of general quality of the CSR site:
I promise not to tell anybody how to fix anything on their non Sea Ray. I've never onwed another type of cruiser, and guessing is not useful.
I will also not post about things for which I have no practical experience. If rendering an opinion, I will say so up front.
I will never tell anybody to trailer a 340DA to Annapolis from DC.
I still have no idea what a Goth is, or why anybody who blessedly wakes up in America each and every day would denigrate Jimmy Buffet.
Oh well.

regards
Skip

Wise words indeed...Just one note, that's Buffett. Buffet is that line you stand on for seconds on the chicken fricassee.

Well, that explains it. The Four Winns is the Microsoft Zune (TM) of the boating world. ;-)

For anyone else, this would have been the KO, but Mr. Four Winns STILL doesn't have the sense to just leave. Bill, just about EVERYONE here knows you simply parrot what little information you've been able to glean in your short and limited boating career. It's great that you've found boating, but you really should sit a few rounds out and listen so that you can learn. You're so busy trying to impress others with what you read in the post before or last months magazine that you miss the point of just about every thread here.

I don't know much about mobile data services, but your credibility there is nil because you espouse such BS everywhere else.

Apparently, there is a growing group of people here that are not interested in your clutter.
