Sold!

nice boat, nice price. it's amazing how many people are asking 40k for the same boat or the 34 sea ray express

As soon as I read the OP I was wondering who would be the first with this response.

I'm not asking him to leave, I was just curious if there is one, because I have no clue about those boats.

Because that is what they feel it's worth. For example, if I were to list my boat, I would not go less than 170K. Will the market bear that price? Probably not, at moment anyway, and I would probably not be selling my boat. Why do people assume that just because there is a recession, they should give their boats away for pennies on the dollar?

To take the point further, suppose I price the boat at what I am willing to sell it for, and some bozo comes up and offers 40% off of that. That's fine, that's what he is willing to pay, but to then give the seller grief because they will not negotiate is BS. (Not that this has happend here, but I did have it happen back when I was selling my 320DA in 2007.) After that experience, I have decided that if a buyer starts getting stupid with offers and being unreasonable, then the selling price of the boat will start to go up. Consider it a one man crusade for the common man, or boat owner in this case.

Now that I have babbled on incoherently, I'll step down from the podium. Have a nice day and don't forget to neuter or spay your pets.

nothing wrong with asking 170k if you don't want to sell it. Like I say to everyone, if you have a nice boat, and like it, don't try to sell it. Otherwise, don't expect to get over book value in this market

Even one of the least experienced guys on this board...Me... knows that a boat or anything else for that matter is worth "The minimum amount the current owner is willing to accept." If Scott won't take less than 170, than thats it. 170.

"Book value" is a BS number comprised of numbers punched into a formula. Not the least of those numbers what a bank says its worth. Thats all I need... some jackazz at a bank sticking his nose where it dosen't belong.

My boat may not be worth much but don't insult me by offering me "book value" for it.

I could say that my old sneakers are worth $1000, that does not make them worth $1000 or even $1 unless somebody wants to buy them.

The boat is worth what the market will bear. If somebody wants to pay $200k for a Top 10 pristine boat, then it is worth 200k. If they only want to pay 140k, then its up to the seller to accept or decline the offer.

Am I happy that the market value for my boat is significantly less than it was a year ago, no. But, that is the reality of the situation.

Those guages do look fantastic! I had the same Crusaders in my last boat and they were totally trouble free for 5yrs (after the first tune up). It was a 1987 Wellcraft and the engines had the origional exhaust manifolds and risers too!

Regarding the discussion on market values... In our current market, a pristine boat such as Scott's unfortunately may indeed not command a higher sale price. It may just be the first and possibly, only one to sell out of a group of other similar models at the lower price BECAUSE it is in such fine shape.

For the unfortunate individuals that find themselves in a "crunch" where they must sell (I've been there with real estate) to reduce their monthly costs - that reality is tough to swallow. To me, it is still preferrable to having the repo man just take the boat, sell it for peanuts, overcharge for their service, and leave me still owing a bunch of money to the lender! (and I would still owe it to the lender)

Chartplotter / Radar / VHF Setup

Here is what I am considering. I got what looks to be a pretty competitive quote from a local (sort of) dealer.

Raymarine C90W Chartplotter

Raymarine RD418D HD Radome

Standard Horizon GX2100S VHF with integrated AIS receiver.

I have a quote from an almost local dealer, and from what I have been able to find online, it's a pretty competitive quote.

My "must-haves" were colour chartplotter, as big as I could afford. They make a C120W, but it is a LARGE jump in price point. I wanted a radar so that we could do some night cruising and have the fog/poor weather option.

I liked the AIS receiver idea, we have a pile of commercial shipping traffic in Lake Erie, and I thought it would be fun to track them on the chartplotter. (I know, you NY guys are giggling at me now....not THAT much commerical traffic). This radio allows me to track AIS through the NMEA tranfer to the chartplotter, without buying a seperate expensive receiver.

The other thing I really wanted was a VHF with a quality speaker and speaker mic. I have always had a hard time with the integrated speakers on my previous VHF radios while underway.

Anyway, if anyone has any opinions on this equipment, good, bad, or ugly, please let me know!

Cheers,

Randy
