So Are We Ready to Decouple from China Now?!

Also, why is it I hear almost ever American say they want some type of term limits
Because Pelosi turned 80 yesterday ….been in congress for 31 years...gets paid $193k/yr and has a net worth of $200M

Beautiful GTO!! My parents had a white 68 LeMans that we took to South Africa when we moved there in '69. Over the years it was repainted the same color (almost) as yours. Looked great. It would get more attention there than a Ferrari as American cars were very scarce.

I bought my first classic 4 years ago and was surprised at how accessible replacement repop parts were. They are almost all Chinese made and when compared to the originals you can see the quality difference in materials and fitment. Thing is, unless you're going to invest in all original parts, in terms of time-to-find and cost, you really have no alternatives. And for some cars it isn't worth investing the $$$ for OEM.

I do believe that we need to designate critical goods that are essential to our healthcare, military and technology that our government, either through regulation and/or tariffs, ensures are 100% American made.

Also, why is it I hear almost ever American say they want some type of term limits for congress and the senate and yet nothing ever even comes close to happening. I'd vote for a monkey if its only plank in its platform was term limits. I figure once we get that passed we can move the monkey along and finally vote for people who give a crap about the country and not just themselves.

Thanks!
Yes, re-pop parts often suffer from quality and fitment issues. But some are getting better. If you know a particular year, make and model really well, you’ll quickly learn what’s out there for it.
I’ve had my car for about 23 years, finished it more than 20 years ago, and it was an unmolested, complete, solid, low mileage, drive-able car when I got it, so there are very few re-pop parts on it.
I was also able to pick up some good OEM spares in the early years that I have stored away. They seemed expensive when I got them, but I really got some bargains by today’s standards.

You don't feel that the incumbents have a huge advantage over their opponents? And that they don't spend an exorbitant amount of time and make policy decisions stickly to get reelected over and over and over?

With your reasoning why does the presidency have term limits?

I think two 6-year terms is a good starting point to allow someone to come in and affect policy for their constituency.

So, what about Mcconnell? 35 years as a US Senator
We have term limits, they are called elections!

At least Pelosi has been elected 16 times, mcconnell has had only 6 elections during that time....
I am with you.... I just saw $11B in the deal today that goes to help Africa ..... That could go along way here and it pissed me off she is leading the effort on these pork projects... McConnell is done too for allowing it in the spirit of bipartisanship... Enough already

I am starting to support randomly selecting US citizens to serve a term in Congress. If we can randomly select citizens for jury duty and put life or death court decisions on them, how can they possibly do any worse than this basket of baboons we have in Congress now?

That might not be a bad idea to fill spots in the house.
It has to be better than the system we have now!

It would work like the military reserves. A member’s job would be protected for 5 years. A members salary would be set at the highest income reported to the IRS within the previous 5 years and all expenses for travel and lodging would be covered. No pension. One term only. A member would be selected then vetted by the FBI for a lower level security clearance and disqualified if he/she did not pass the background.
Obviously, I have been wishing for this for a long time.
All the state and local governments should be the same.

I know the OP originally posts about decoupling from China but I’d like to add Saudi Arabia to that list. They’re flooding the market w oil and the small to mid tier US producers are now in jeopardy of collapsing.

Our refineries shouldn’t be processing a single drop of foreign oil like they are right now.

Only US oil should flow through our refineries.

Yes. Trump needs to make the FU phone call.

Our enemies are smelling blood and piling on.
When we get done beating this thing and getting back to work, time to “adjust” some relationships.
None of these $&ithole countries (yes, I said it) are worth anything without the US either buying their junk, buying their oil, buying their diamonds, buying vacations, or giving them foreign aid.
Now that China has demonstrated how “friendly” they are with the country that made them an economic success by trying to pin the pandemic on us. Now that our only “ally” of the Arab world has told us to F-off and glutted oil when we are already weakened economically, the US needs to shut them off economically when we beat the virus. No importing or exporting, period.
The US should foster and develop new relationships with our Southern Hemisphere countries needing some real assistance like Guatemala, El Salvador’s, Honduras, etc. We can also look in Africa for economic manufacturing potential. Have GM build a parts plant in Kenya and see how loud China starts screaming.
I am sure it is much more complicated. I am pretty much a dumbass. But it sure would be nice if that would actually happen.

Problem is, look at how many members of the House and the Senate are bought and paid for by China and SA. Look at the people in government that are coming unglued when anyone mentions "Wuhan Virus" or "Chinese Virus". Tells you all you need to know.

It's w-a-y past time to decouple from China and their cheap stuff. Give me a choice and I'll buy "Made in USA"!

I would to but years ago the laws were changed that eliminated the requirement for advertisers to includes the country of origin in the adds. Time to change that law back to what it used to be.

The "My Pillow" guy has switched part of his plant to mask manufacturing. It would be great to see more manufacturing companies sprout up or switch to what we need. Obviously it won't be sustainable once the pandemic is contained, but maybe he can keep that avenue going as a side to his pillows, or then switch to something else to keep made in the USA.

Many are. But it's not that easy with the FDA involved. You just can't start making masks, ventilators, and such and giving them to hospitals.

Oh the irony. Listening to politicians like Cuomo on TV complain that NY manufacturers can't make the things he needs. They aren't complex he says. Well here's my message for him: Hey FT, you and your ilk drove manufactures out of NY and into China. We are now paying a price.
