I was out today with the cruise control set to 3250 RPM. I slowed then put the 496 motors into neutral to disabled cruise control and move through a no wake zone. The vessel view warnings started sounding for both motors. First, “limit engine” then “over temp.” But the temp was normal 173 degrees on each side. I shut down for ten minutes, checked the bilge (dry), then to home port I noticed the temps were higher at slower speeds and cooler when the throttle was pushed a little. No issues prior to today. Haven’t run the boat in a month.

Sorry for the long narrative but any idea on what may have happened?

Hi Radiowave - to me its improbable that the impellers, thermostats etc would suddenly go bad simultaneously. I would look at what is common between the two engine . I dont know your specific configuration, so. can't say both engines share the same thru hull or sea chest but I would check the thru hull filters, sea chest etc as the first item to determine if there is restricted water flow there. Also you I indicate that you didn't use the boat for a month so if it was in the water during that time your intake grate could have growth, hard or soft, clogging the intake . Start with that to ensure you dont have restricted water flow. Once you rule that out you'll have to dig further into impellers and the like. You could have also sucked up sand etc that caused deterioration to both impellers

Thank you MiloII for your helpful reply. I will start with your tips.
