Hello: I recently bought a 2003 240 SunDeck with Mercury SmartCraft Gauges. The cluster has a square LED monitor in the middle and 6 round tradition guages. The guages were working fine but becuase I just bought the boat I wanted to reset a few of screens in the SmartCraft Monitor like fuel used....

Somehow I ended up in the Calibration settings and messed things up. Now the Tach and Speedo keep sweeping from left to right regardless of speed and even when the engine is off with the key in the on postion. I have the owners manual and have gone through the CAL1 and CAL2 step by step and this had not resolved the issue. The needles on the Tach keep on sweeping. Also the RPM on the Smart Craft LED Monitor climbs and falls to match the tach, even though the engine is off.

I've called my local Dealer with no luck. I've also call Merc with no immediate luck but they're trying to find a tech to call me.....But I'm not optimitic.

I could really use some help....Any suggestions

Thanks, Bill

Be sure when calibrating that after each reset you hit the save button for that parameter before moving onto the next one. I had the same issue once.

It sounds like some how you got it into Simulator Display mode. Here is a Link to the Smartcraft Manual , I downloaded it and printed a copy to stay on the boat.

You could also turn off the battery/s for a few minutes if turning of the Simulator Display does not work.

Thanks for the replies so far. Thanks for the link to the manual. I didn't see anything in the manual on simulator mode but knowing that's a possibility helps. I'll be at the marina this weekend and give the sugggestions a try. I'm assuming that a master reset does not reset the engine hours meter....Can someone confirm?

The hours are stored in the ECM on the engine. I really doubt the user could reset that - every used boat out there would have almost zero hours on it.

Hi, did anyone ever hear how this problem was resolved. I have the exact same problem with pretty much the same boat. I've spent hours trying to see if I had an electrical problem with the wire harness and I'm now in the process of buying a new smartcraft monitor. Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks, bob 21

I was able to fix the problem using the link to the manual that "jimandsue60" posted on this thread. The system was in simulator mode. I had a manual to the gauges that came with boat but it didn't cover this issue...the manual that is at the link below has the step by step instructions for a Master reset. I printed the manaul from the link and took it with me to the Marina, I followed the instructions for a master reset and now it the gauges work fine. Good luck

WCGASTON, thanks for that reply. I'll try it. My manual also does not cover the master reset, but I did see it in the on-line manual. A mechanic that I had working on the problem said he did a reset, but now I have my doubts.

My problem is so identical to yours that it has to have the same solution.

thanks again.

I have a similar issue on a 320SD. There is no sweeping of dials though. My problem involves the drive trim indicators....

While crusing at slow speed (less then 10 knots or so) there is no problem. I programmed the digital windows in the main 3 dials to show (from L to R) Speed & water temp, port rpm + strbrd rpm sync, water depth.

When speed increases the guages get goofy. The one set to show water depth switches to trim adjustment setting and goes up and down erractically. The center dial goes to "trim sync" and shows varying degrees of the starboard drive being moved up and down. If I try to switch it back to depth it just switches back immediatly.

Physically, I dont notice any of this happening and even push the trim toggle lever down just to make sure, with no effect.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance for any comments
