Hey there,

I have a couple inches of sloppy travel in the steering wheel of my 280DA. Its not the gimbel ring and I can actually see it in the power assist piece at the transom which the steering cable attaches to (see photo below) . As I move the steering wheel back and forth through the sloppy spot, the area in the red semicircle moves. This means the internal steering cable does not move correctly. As I continue past the sloppy spot this movement stops and you can feel the cable moving correctly inside the assembly.

Does anyone know how to tighten this up or do you replace the entire steering assist piece the hex nut attaches to? Does any one know the manufacturer or part number? Teleflex says its not theirs.

Thanks!!

Great questions because mine does the same thing. Thats a tough fit back there!

same issue I've had...any experience with this would be appreciated.

It's not a problem, does that by design. 3" slop at the wheel is considered normal.

This has been an issue for my 260 also. Replaced gimball ring this spring do you having like 2 feet of side to side play in it, replaced steering pin and really tightened the steeering lever to it. Took boat out and felt the same. I can be up on plane and it feels like steering is all the way to left or right just to go straight. Is this normal? Automatic tabs will put one all the way down, other all the way up trying to level boat out. Probably 3 inches of slop in both directions when steering wheel is centered. How do you adjust the cable, the nut in or out on the treaded part in connects to behine engine?
