Sitting or Standing when steering boat.

I find this interesting - the captain and I both sit most of the time - unless it's really nuts out there - but we do sit on the throwable floating seat cushions so we can see over the windshield - really bad design although it looks good - the 185 sport we looked at has the flip up seat and we were told it was just a test by searay as an add on feature to see if anyone took it and that it wasn't popular so we didnt even pursue it - wish we had themnow.

Always stand as well, otherwise cannot see anything in front. The legs get awfully tired after a day of cruising. I was interested to read some of the solutions to the "non bolster" seats (guess I may be going to Bass Pro to get some more throwables). Would love to swap out the standard seat for a bolster, has anyone tried this?

I always sit in the helm chair. Used to use the bolster a lot, but not anymore ... I am 6'6", so I can see reasonably well, onlyhate to ahve to look around my fender racks all the time ... but I don't want to deal with fenders in the cockpit or lazarette ...

You can purchase an adjustable hieght post from overtons, or gander mountain. I forget the brand name, but I got one that lined up with all of the previous mounting holes, it looks just like stock. All I have to do is reach down and pull a lever and I can be sitting below or above the wind shield. Sometimes I have it high enough I can lean on it, but then the wheel is a little low for me.

Thanks for the info, sounds like a good solution, I will look for it.

I found (like many others have already stated) that the throwable PFD works great for me.... The seating in the 195 is a little low, but the throwable puts me just over the windshield...

I emailed the president of searay about the seats a couple of weeks ago, and he said he would have the upholstery dept. make some cussions to use and mail them to me. It's not ideal, but better than sitting on my foot. Plus it is free.

I've got to stand, otherwise I'm sure to hit a lobster pot or debris. I've seen one big log so far.

I prefer to stand for visibility, especially since we hit our first log 6 months ago.

I will also sit on a throwable cushion at times but never feel 100% comfortable with the lack of visibility.

2 other Sea Ray 330s at our marina have raised their seats 4"+, which is very nice.

sitting on a throwable, sometimes just on the seat. The windshield frame is right in a spot where if I sit up on the bolster it's kind of in the way, unless I stand at the bolster(I just haven't done that yet for any length of time)

I usually stood with one knee on my seat on the 185, sometimes if it's calm, and not many boaters, I'd stand in the middle of the walkthru with one hand on the steering (capt. Ron style). If I'm on a long ride, and it's not to wavy or crowded, I sat. The seat position on the 185 wasn't right for standing behind the steering wheel, the seat was to close to the console.

In my 210, so far, I've only been out for maybe 30 minutes. I've tried all 3 positions, but it was so cold that day, I mostly stayed sitting down.

Sitting on the seat itself. I can see fine through the windshield and enough visibility to see important stuff like large logs and other boats/jets.

This may change as the river fills up a bit more coming into season, or when we do watersports.

I have some phone books on standby.

Sitting. I keep hitting my head on the canvas when I stand, plus it's hard to jockey the throttles while standing. Then I can hold the steering wheel with my knee and have a hand on each throttle if I need too.

For most everthing I stand, Manuvering, short rides, etc. If I'm standing it's easier to gawk a a boatload of babes that pass by. If I'm seated and jump up too fast it usually catches the eye of the Admiral and I get to feel an empty Corona bottle on the back of my skull for being a jerk.

If we are on a long cruise I usually sit if the dog will give up the helm seat.

When I'm cruising the ocean on long trips, for a change I find it very comfortable to sit on the bench seat back with my feet on the seat. Autopilot on of course and I can see everything.
Otherwise, I stand or use the multiple seat adjustments, up/down, forward or back.

We ordered the filler cushions from the plant. I requested color coordinated, but as fillers they might be neutral color. We will send them to the address requested . I hope they meet your need.
Thanks again for choosing Sea Ray.

Does the upholstery dept need to know the colors of the seats, or will they be in all white? Also they can be mailed to 1403 South 9th street Ozark,Mo. 65721.

Thanks again.

Dear Mr. McGehee,
Rick Stone asked me to look into your issue.
First, thank you for your feedback regarding your 185 Sport, and thank you for purchasing a Sea Ray. The challenge of designing seats which accommodate all situations has long been a challenge. I have asked our upholstery department if it is feasible to build two bolster (cushions) to insert when needed. You would be able to remove them when not needed. I would be happy to send these to you if think these might accommodate your needs. How much rise do you suggest?

185sport

I purchased our searay last year at the local boat show. While looking at the boats, we looked at the 185sp they had. I specifically asked if the boat came with the thigh rise bolster seats, and was told yes. After prchasing the boat, we went to view the boat before we took it home and noticed it did not have the seats we wanted.

Dont get me wrong, I love my boat, but the other seats would make boating much more enjoyable. I was told that since they added in the forward bow seat cussion, that we did not pay for, they could not help us out with the seats.

I now wish I would have not accepted the boat without the seats. The seats in the boat, are not high enough, and I end up sitting on my foot all day which is not ideal. I guess I was just wondering if there was any thing you could do to get the bad taste out of my mouth so to speak.

You thought I was fibbing huh?

I prefer to stand in rough water. I have trouble judging the size of the waves while sitting. When I am pulling a tube or skiier I sit on my leg. Boy I wish this boat had the flip-up bolster! It may be time for an upgrade :)

OK, so you had a Customer Service issue, they did the right thing and took care of you.

Are these bolster seats specific to your boat? Pics maybe?

I end up stacking pillows, foam PDF throwables, and it's a pain. I have even considered a child booster seat like you see at restaurants...unfortunately I am too big though.
