Sitting or Standing when steering boat.

well pushing 5'9" i dont set any height records by any means... with that being said im generally standing or on the bolster seat, but i find the bolster seat isnt really high enough either, so its generally standing.

Depends on what the waves are doing.

if it's fairly flat then I'm sitting.

If it's choppy then i'm usually standing to absorb as much shock with my legs as possible.

Boy this sure has been a surprise. I thought it would just be some of the smaller sport boats standing/sitting on the bolster, but it seems like us full sitters are the minority

Chuck,

For the most part, I am a sitter. However, I do on occasion stand behind the wheel.

If anyone is interested, I will trade my stereo with the ipod plug in for the bolster seats. I dont use an ipod anyways. I thought we were getting the bolster seats but that is a long story. Any takers?

While underweigh, or docking, or crowded Im standing, I figure every little bit of lookout makes me as safe as possible.
The only time I sit really is when we are just trolling around and there really isnt anybody else out.

And of course when we are at anchor.

I can stand in my center walkway with one hand on the wheel "Capt Jack" style. It puts me in the almost exact center of the boat, helps with weight placement, and gives me the best ride.

I'm pretty much only sitting on the bolster seat or standing up. Sitting on the chair just feels weird I guess. :smt101

I hate not having the bolster seats. The salesman sold us by saying we would not need them on the smaller boats, but when I sit, I always sit on my knee, or foot, and it gets old quick. I wish the seats would raise up like a desk chair. I bet I could rig one up from an old office chair.

On the weekends on the local lake I stand almost all the time. Lots of traffic and those blasted jet skis zipping all around. If the lake is quiet, I'll alternate between sitting and standing. Standing allows me to see the water much better to watch out for things - branches, logs, ect.

Searay Sport, my friend doesn't have bolster seats either. he taped a couple of bumpers together and threw them on the chair when under way. Not the greastest look, but it worked well and he had good padding. Just a thought.

I have to be either standing or sitting on the bolster seat. I guess I just like the wind in my hair and like seeing clearly what is in front of me. I do love sitting down in the seat when we are stopped and chillin, but not while driving.

I really don't like looking thru the glass either so I'm usually leaning back against the bolster. But as gbolton stated, I love the seats when we are just taking it easy.

I too need to be above the glass. That windshield is almost pointless, or the seat is almost pointless, or both! If I am completely sitting (I have back-to-back seats) its like I'm driving in a sports car. And that's fine if I was, but I'm not. Can't see anything close in front. Am always on the lookout for crab pot buoys, logs, etc. in the water and sitting you just wouldn't notice.

What I did was bought three square throwable PFD's. Added velcro to each one so that they can all stack (and stay stacked) together. That gets me in a perfect spot. Before that, I was sitting on one leg, etc. just like a lot of you.

And now, if three people go overboard, I won't have to choose who I like the most. :smt001 (though I'm sure I'd have bigger problems at that point).

99% of the time on the flip up bolster or standing. Rare that I'm sitting in the seat way to many other boaters around here to worry about and sitting I feel my vision is obstructed.

Same here as well.
