Shurflo 5901 Extreme water pump leaking water from the motor housing - fix or replace

I have a Shurflo 5901-0201 fresh water pump. It is the 5.7 GPM Extreme version.

I noticed some water in the forward bilge a few weeks ago and traced it to the pump. Assumed it was the gasket where the pump assembly connects to the motor housing. Took apart and put some permatex on it and screwed it back together. Still leaking. Digging further I realized that water is leaking into the motor assembly and then out. When I pulled the motor housing it was full of water. Here is a video where after I took the bottom mounting bracket off, the pump turns on and water comes pretty good out of the bracket holes.

My guess is that water is getting through the shaft seal. Pump is not that expensive, but it still works. Wondering if I should toss it and buy a new one or is it fixable.

Buy a new one, and keep that one as a spare.

I'm going to guess that even if you take it apart you wont be able to detect exactly which of the seals (I think 3) is leaking. I've had a 3 diaphragm unit apart before (yours is 5) and I'm pretty sure the seals themselves cant be replaced. If you replace the head & it still leaks, you'd come out cheaper to just buy a new pump even though its $300+. Below is a link that might be helpful if you haven't already seen it....

Spoke to shurflo and their opinion was to replace the pump too. Ordered online for $270. Thanks.

BTW, the Shurflo 5901 pump has been discontinued and is being replaced by part #4158-153-E75

I had to replace my pump as well recently and found it considerably cheaper at the local RV dealer. I find that anything to do with marine water and plumbing is much cheaper at a RV supply place and are basically the same.

How old was it? The gave me a new #4158-153-E7 to replace a one year old 5901. I think the warranty is three years.

The replacement is not as nice as the Extreme, much louder at least in my boat.

How old was it? The gave me a new #4158-153-E7 to replace a one year old 5901. I think the warranty is three years.

Pump mfg date was 2005, so I assume it was original to the boat in 2006.

Any fix that is less than $300 is a good fix in my book.
