Where should the shrink wrap zipper door be installed?

Last year the shrink wrap guy said it was best to put it on the starboard side about 2-3 feet from the transom. This worked but you had to climb to the top step of a 6' ladder and straddle the gunwale to use the door. Very awkward especially for an older guy like me.

It would be much more convenient in the back of the boat near the walk-thru transom and over the swim paltform.

Even on the side of the boat the tape holding the door to the shrink wrap eventually pulled away leaving a small gap.

Where have you guys placed this door and how did it work out?

Thanks
Frank

Yea, that's kinda odd that that guy told you to put it in that weird spot.

Obviously, we do a lot of shrinkin'. I want these boats to be as easy as possible to get in over the Winter.

Your original thought, and the ones above, are the only ones that make sense. By the transom door.

Storing anywhere above the cockpit in my opinion is a bad idea. I would definitely go over the swim platform. The cockpit is awfully high up and it would be ugly site to stumble and take a ride on the shrink wrap "slip and slide". In case of stumbling, what do you grab? Also, no matter how well it is attached with blue tape, moisture (although not much) always seemed to seep through and snow and ice does collect on the zipper. My boat is kept at home outside and I like being able to remove the ice and snow while walking by. In fact, last year I taped a shrink wrap flap over it, until the wind beat it up.... duhhhh. Crawling through the zipper and cockpit door reminds me somewhat of the birthing process.

Thanks, guys, for all the replies. As I recall, my shrink wrap guy thought the door would hold up better on the side.

This year I'll be sure and suggest the back of the boat.

At the end of the season, cut your shrink wrap door out and save it, next year you can use it again the put it where you want it. My marina charges $50 for the door!:smt013

Frank was the guys second suggestion to put it over the cabin hatch? This way you can open the door and just drop into the cabin? Yea, transom door is where mine is going

I paid $30 for the zipper door and I did save it from last year by cutting it out. Unfortunately, I just tried to remove the tape from it and it's stuck on pretty good. I'll probably rip the door if I try and pull off all the tape. I'll probably have to buy a new door.

Again, thanks for all the responses.

Why pull the tape off? Just re-tape over the old stuff.

I put my door on the transom .I did not shrink wrapp the swim platform so it's easy to walk in.

Thanks. Drove right by it 2 weeks ago. That's where my boat was bought.
