I lived in the corporate manufacturing world for 25 years... World wide sourcing ...not home for weeks, cost reductions... Quality issues, Warranty issues, politics... Supplier nightmares....everything under the sun. Then I quit.... Retired I called it... Now I have a small machine shop where I got back to having fun again, making stuff... I once looked at these parts as strictly profit.. I now look at it like art... art is actually more fun. Here are a couple of pictures of parts we made in the last couple of weeks... The small square block is 3" square the other part is 16" tall and 14" wide both are machined out of solid.

I am guessing we all have unique backgrounds where we do some interesting things..... So show us some of the stuff you make

Blueone. Your parts are truly art, great craftsmanship, engineering, and something to be truly proud of. I wish I had some of my own to share, however I'm on the other end as we sell, service, and integrate the types of machines you use to make the masterpieces.

Thanks Tom... Both of these parts were made on a MORI DMU50.... Crazy machine...

Great work.

I sell the Cutting Tools.

I agree those are great machines, and we sold them here in the lower peninsula for 10 years before they went direct.

So you are Ellison and went Doosan?.... I know a few Ellison guys that didn't go MORI and stayed with Ellison and have since gone back... That was a mess for sure

The order for the big aluminum part was for 2.... After 4 hours of first op roughing and 3 hours of second op roughing the end mill pulled out of the collet a 1/4"..... Scrapping the part... I lost a lot of respect for a Nikken End mill chuck after that and that hurt a bit because I always used them

We actually pre-dated Ellison. We had the line prior to Mori going direct with what they called Mori Midwest Sales at the time. That didn't work out as expected, so they went back to the distributer model and brought on Ellison. If I remember for a short time there were actually offices named DMG/Mori/Ellison Sales. It was a bit confusing for a few years there to say the least. I've been in machine tool sales for 30 years, and Mori typically changes their sales model every 8-10 years.
We've had the HAAS Automation line since 1990, and it was quite a run when we had both HAAS and Mori there for a while.

I worked for Yamazen Chicago tooling up the machines when they had Mori Seiki back in the 80’s...

That sucks. I hate when that happens.

I come from the welding / fabrication side of the metal working industry. Built a lot of stuff like this over the last 30 years. Our son has taken over the business "rains", so mom and me are kickin back....watching the next generation....

I know absolutely NOTHING about what you guys are talking about, and when I look at the pic you posted I feel like I'm looking at a couple of Transformers that are going to "unwind" themselves and turn into some kind of gun totin' androids.

After retiring from healthcare for many years, I "make the grass grow". Doing manual labor now after years of doing almost none. Just about 6 more days of work in the yard and it will be all cleaned up. Big job, but satisfying to see the changes.

I was in foundation design drilling and environmental monitoring and clean up. Ran equipment and wrenched until our company was awarded the monitoring contract for Love Canal back in the early 80’s. Got big in a hurry and began supervising. Mid 80’s was bought out by a huge UK company that came into the US and bought a bunch of profitable little companies that did that kind of work. They ran the business into the ground in 5 years. We started our own business in ‘92 doing what we did before. My partner was the engineer and wore the suit, and I dealt with all the equipment and operations and came home smelling like diesel fuel a lot (which was perfect) I retired 2 1/2 years ago. Now I keep busy in my shop when I’m home. We like to travel and head south in the winters. Right now we’re cruising the Bahamas on our boat and I’m drinking a Kalik as I type, getting ready to watch another sunset, making memories.
