On my last trailer safety inspection the tech mentioned the decal with the VIN is almost unreadable. His recommendation is to punch the VIN in a suitable location. My question is: How have those of you who have had this problem handled it. Secondly, would a alphanumeric 1/4" punch set work on the trailer? It is a galvanized steel trailer.

We've certainly come across this in the past and as long as we have some type of documentation (title, registration, etc) with the VIN it's never been an issue.

But, before you punch numbers into the trailer and give rust a place to start (since you'll likely break through the galvanizing to the bare steel), I would contact ShoreLand'r (with your VIN in hand) and see if you can get a new one from them.

Thanks for the reply and the heads-up about passible rust issues. I am thinking of having a brass plaque made at a trophy shop and then using aluminum pop rivets or epoxy to secure it to the trailer tongue.
