Engines
Caterpillar 3126-TA w/ ZF 80-IV
When CAT surveyed the engines on my 410 back in December, they said they would have liked to see another 30-40 RPMs at
full throttle.

I wanted a set of spares, so I bought a set of new wheels and had them Prop scanned and re-pitched just under what the existing props were to gain a few R's.....

This morning I was able to get the local yard to haul and put on the new props.

After the install, I ran her up to full throttle and both engines ran right up to 2850 rpm....just what the CAT man said he wanted to see....

Nice and Shinney too....

very nice.

Did they heat the shafts up with a blow torch to pop off the old ones?

They used a hydraulic "popper".....those babies made a real nice "pinging" noise when they let go....

That popping/ping noise is amazing... everytime I get my props swapped, they've used a torch on the shafts to pop them off. Always makes me nervous seeing 2 feet of flames shooting around a plastic hull.

Dom,
If you don't mind a little side track, I noticed that your trim tabs are painted. Mine aren't.
Should I paint mine, and if so, should I use regular bottom paint? (Petit Hydracoat)
Thanks, and best of luck once again with the new boat.
Steve

We really could start a whole other thread on painting the underwater metals. However, very briefly, I've tried all the tricks in the past....from nothing, to grease (yes grease... that was from an ol' salt and it didn't work), to a two day ritual of sandblasting, priming, epoxy coating and then bottom painting to just simply painting.......

What seems to work best, is a hard modified epoxy bottom paint.....

I say "best" but that is not to imply "well"......the underwater metals, at least in my experiences, need to be inspected and cleaned regularly......especially in the heat of the summer months....

Hi Dominic...what size and pitch did you end up with? I also had mine repitched on my 40DA. 4 blade - 22" dia x 22.8" pitch....original pitch was 23". Boat now runs to 2850 with light load....have not tried with full fuel.

Regards,
Ed

Boat came from factory with 22 X 23. Previous owner repitched to 22 X ~22.2 via MRI Scan and the boat ran just a hair over 2800RPM. I now went to a 22 X 22 via Prop Scan and now get right at 2850 .

Just curious....mine was short 150rpm and Proscan took of .2" of of pitch. Your was short 50rpm and took of .2" of pitch.

See ya on the bay....Ed

Let me clarify.....

My situation is a little different. Here are the particulars:

22 X ~22.2 are the measurements on the set of props that the boat came with via a MRI Scan.

22 X 22 are the measurements on a new set of props via PROP SCAN .

Different type of Prop measurements done by two different prop shops.

Both sets of props are Hytorq nibral.

When I bring in the original props that the boat came with, my prop shop will pre scan the pitch. Then I will be able to more exactly tell you what the props were before and after.....Hope that clears it up....

I don't know what RPM the boat turned with the original 22 X 23....but I'm sure somebody here does...
