We are going to be traveling (3 boats) south through the Shennecock Canal on July 23. It has been about 8 years since I have been through the canal (and the locks). Are the lock doors open during an incomming or outgoing tide? How much time do we have before and after high tide, when the doors are open?

I would prefer not to "lock" through if we can. Also, I would like to go through the south bay during high tide if we can. We are headed to Atlantique on Fire Island. Any anchoring areas near Atlantique?

Any help would be appreciated.

Eric,
The doors are only open at slack tide. I personally prefer to lock tru.... I am not a FAN of runningthe locks ... way to many idiots havent a clue how to run with or against a current.... U can look up and call the locks the day off and they can give u an aprox time the locks will be open

I agree it's better to lock thru, as for Atlantique, non-residents are allowed to dock in the marina from Sunday after 5pm, to friday 11am. I am a town of Islip resident and know the area well,
enjoy

I am sad to report that our trip has been canceled. My friends backed out due to fuel cost. I did not want to make the trip myself.

Another casualty of today's reality!
