Seven people unaccounted for after fire destroys 35 boats in AL

I just read this on Yahoo. Hard to believe that 7 people are unaccounted for. So sad. Must have spread fast

Holy moly.

It looks like there was a roofing structure - do docks with overhead structures like that typically have any automatic fire suppression? Like sprinkler systems?

I've not seen fire suppression equipment at the covered docks I've seen.

Makes me wonder....if I were asleep in my boat with the A/C or heat on, would I hear a fire like that before it was too late to get out? Perhaps the roof crashing down would be the first warning. Particularly for those hard of hearing.

Not the ones in my area. They just have fire extinguishers attached to the uprights in various locations. And of course, each slip has a fresh water spigot.

Definitely not the same as an automatic fire suppression system. I guess it would be someone difficult to add a sprinkler system to a structure that's mostly outdoors, unheated, and has to account for movement.

Likewise, have never seen (or heard of) a sprinkler system on covered docks..I imagine the cost to install (and maintain) would be cost prohibitive, and I'm not sure how effective it would be....while it's way too early to investigate the cause of this, my guess would be on a space heater.

In the installations we develop and manage (NFPA compliant) the sprinkler systems are design to enable people to exit safely not necessarily to save the structure. Better would be heat or IR detectors and horns. Sad loss..

Tragic, Prayers for the families.

A dry deluge system would be cheap and would provide some level of protection or at least increase escape time. Basically a dry system of piping so no freezing, but can be activated manually to spray water from all heads simultaneously.

Our covered moorage docks all have a fire suppression system overhead. Money was not a problem when they were built because they were built with public funding.

Horrible situation. I'll bet the people that died were either on or close to the boat(s) that exploded..causing the fire.

Anyone know if any CSR members were involved?

Usually its no problem gold plating the build, Its maintaining the facility long term that often suffers for 'lack' of funding.
