I have a 1987 260hp 350cu in my 87' 250 Sundancer. Just bought it this past winter. I have had a problem with the alternator belt squealing. I have to tighten the belt almost every time out. I am curious if anyone has changed the pulleys and installed a serpentine belt system. I hope to hear back from anyone with any ideas. Thanks

Did you replace the belt? Once they start to slip, the surface glazes and no amount of tightening helps.

thanks foryour responses. I have replaced the belt twice this year. both times I bought the replacements from napa. they would work fine for a couple trips but would eventually start to squeel. I will try a goodyear gattor this time. Thanks, joe

Make sure you clean your pulleys as well when you replace the belt. If the belt is truly loosening up you may need to look at your adjustment and see if it needs some focus.

I have a similiar problem with my serpentine belt. The belt is new and after about 2 hours of running it began to squeel. The belt is tight, all pulleys spin smooth and the water pump and pulley are new. Everything seems to be in alignment. A mechanic looked at it and felt everything was fine. He stated, "you just have a noisy belt." Believe it or not, hair spray, not belt lube stops the noise for about a 1/2 then starts again. Any thoughts?
By the way the serpentine is on a belt tensioner system.

On a serpentine system - check that the back of the belt is not glazed. There could have been something spilled on it even though it is new. Also - if a new belt starts squealing you are usually looking at an idler pulley or the tensioner as being suspect. If the belt has glazed then you are looking at another belt. I wouldn't spray hair spray on it since it's flammable....never know when a spark is going to ignite you!
