"Self made" diesel polish system

Peter- Under normal circumstances, my filters do not look like that. That said, I have polishers and I use a bit fuel so it is always fresh. In the past, I have done shock treatments when I bought a used boat. It's a seemingly endless process that involves dozens of filters. If the dirt and residue bother you (and it would bother me), I would recommend calling a professional fuel polisher to come service your tanks. From that point forward, follow all recommended procedures for storage, i.e. full tanks, maintenance additives, etc. There are many who would simply keep filter elements on board and change them as necessary. That route along w/ some additives would likely result in clean fuel as well if you use a lot of fuel.

Good luck.
Thanks Matt for your reaction.
I made a simple system, and let it run for 1 week now constantly on both tanks (so 2 weeks total).

This works perfect!
Mounted a smaller pump (40GPH) and filtered my total fuel a lot of times now.
The racor 500MA did a perfect job with a 2 micron filter.
It was black!
Now I mounted a new filter and this one stays clean

Peter, I'm glad that seems to have worked for you. Did you do this in conjunction with additives or just the filter? What connections did you use for a pick up and return to the tanks?

Peter, glad to hear it worked. What are we looking at? Is that the test run(tile floor in backround?). Did you actually selftap screws into the fuel tank? If so keep an eye on them for future leaks.

Hello Matt,

Yes I used a shock amount of Biocide and Wynn's fuel dry.

I used this connections:

Hello Dave,

I used a wooden board and put the pump and filter on it, so that it stays horizontal in the boat.

I used my own tank connections, and put these adapter fittings on them.

I looked at "professional system, and only made it simple, to see if it worked.

Then 12 volts on the system, and let it run for a week per tank.

Pete:

Do you have pics of the system installed on your boat? I'm still not sure where/how you connected the polisher into your fuel lines.

I can make some photo's this weekend.
I just connected the Racor 500MA and than the pump to the shut-off valves on the tank.( I disconnected the normal fuel lines temporarily)
I return the filtered diesel simply to the return line on the tank.
So the pump just circulates the diesel again and again through the Racor 500MA.
If you do that for a week on one tank it circulates the complete 140 gallons almost 50 times through the racor filter!!
It filtered all the dirt and water out of my tanks.

I do nothing more than installing a very simple fuel polishing system that worked the same as a "professional" system that you see here.

Only I did it temporarily...

Oh...I thought you permanently installed this polisher....

Seems like a lot of work to remove/install before/after every fill up.... Did you make two or do you do one side at the time?

I install it in 10-15minutes a side...
Just remove the normal fuel line and put the other on the tank shut-off valves connections.
I made a 12V cigarette plug on the power cable from the pump.
The pump and the racor 500MA are installed on a wooden board.
And I am not filtering after every fill up.
Thinking about a couple of times a year and hold my tanks very clean in between with biocide additive's.

Very simple, cheap and effective .

We have and will soon be posting the scientific details of how our unit polishes fuel better than any other unit.

"Higher flow rate is better" for fuel polishing in order to remove water and the resultant bacteria is a common misconception and often results in added expense through unnecessary filter replacement.

"Home grown" and high flow rate systems while argueably being helpful for an already existing fuel problem do not address and fix the root cause of the problem and only add to the complexity of fuel system maintenance.

More details can be found at our website http://www.ParkerFuelPolishing.com

Hello Richard,

I use this very simple "self made" system now for 2 seasons and it works perfect!
I use a 40GPH electric pump, that in practice pumps about 20 gph of diesel when mounted on a Racor 500MA.(I timed it with a jerry can to measure this)
When I used it the first 2 times the filter was black when I circulated my diesel for a week.
This year the filter stays clean.
It's funny to see that Parker uses also a low flow electric pump and also pump the fuel through the Racor mounted in the boat.
Also the principle about polishing when the engines are not running is the same.
Only difference is the price from my system.

Thanks for confirming what I already know now.

Regards Peter.
