Select EX Thread

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Am I the only guy w/ a 6.2 / 320 HP engine on this thread? I "only" get 44 to 45 mph out of it but it looks like I wouldn't get much more if I had the 435 HP.

I've had my boat since August 2005 but repowered w/ a new long block last year and, as some of you might be aware, SR replaced the entire hull last year as well. I can tell you that this hull is much better than the first.

We just returned from our fourth trip up the Mississippi from LeClaire Iowa to Lake City Minnesota and back. That's another story. What an "adventure" it was this time. 25 to 30 mph winds on Lake Pepin, one "daring sea rescue", overnighting in a t-storm w/ 60 to 70 mph winds, a plague of mayflies, a wave washing over the transom in lock #5, a check engine alarm in the middle of the lake (had to replace the IAC controller motor), the windshield wiper falling off & driving in a frog strangling rain, I could go on.

Anyway, I love the boat.

Dennis,

We have the 375hp engine, and are struggling to reach 44mph... Still working on this issue. It is very aggravating. Also, too bad about the crappy weather on your trip. We recently lost our windshield wiper as well. :smt013 Any photos from your travels?

i was speaking with a mercruiser engine expert and he was saying that the 486 mag HO was really for "higher altitude" applications and you won't notice much difference between the two at sea level......

with my 496 mag at 375 hp I still get 50+ mph speed....

FYI

Ugh, desperado.. I WISH I HAD YOUR BOAT. Oh wait.. I have the same boat :smt021 . I just can't get more than 4500ish RPM's out of it. :smt089 . It's really a shame.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Thanks,

It must just need to be replaced? Sounds like we got a bad windlass  . After each trip, I have to raise the windlass before docking, regardless of if I have used it or not. Usually, I have to lift the windlass up manually, once docked, while someone pushes the "up" button, for it to actually hold tight. With that said, it only "holds tight" until we go out again and hit a few waves :smt009

i'd call your dealer and let them know what is going on.

Have you checked with your dealer about the drive gearing? There is no excuse for not getting full performance on a brand new boat!

As for the anchor, I never use ours. It is a $1,400 replacement and our lake tends to eat anchors. I have a cable that hooks to the anchor and a cleat under the bow cover that holds the anchor secure...Oh yeah, I dock stern in, so the anchor is never a problem at the dock.

The windshield wipers are splined on and the splines wear out. I drilled and tapped and put a set screw in mine and now its fine.

I agree. We're working on it... :smt014

Top RPM SHOULD be around 5000, right? :smt024
I want to get up to 50+mph before the end of the summer. This boat can certainly do it, so hopefully this problem will be short-lived.

The specs for WOT RPM are 4,400 - 4,800. I guess they could argue that your engine is within spec. We have no problem getting 4,800 though.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

I love my sports tower, but at the same time there is a give and take I believe. You get more coverage (sun/rain) if you DON'T have the tower and you have the canopy kit.

We have had such a cool summer in Michigan, I decided to remove the fabric from the fiberglass tower today. WOW, does that change the look of the boat. I realize you guys down South probably need the protection but the look is sweet.

BTW, there is a tag on the fabric that says "do not exceed 45 mph with the sun shield installed." :smt101

Here's another FYI for those of you who have the little fridge on your 270 SLX.

When the power supply module craps out, the bill will be $396.00. Including discount.

A new fridge is nearly $700. So, I guess I did the right thing.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Does the frig stay cold on real hot days?

Yes, it does stay cold. Of course, how cold depends on how often you open it.

It will not run while under the cockpit cover on hot days as it has that safety built in to shut it off when ambient temps exceed 110 F. So, leaving the thing on while we're not boating in the summer is not an option.

We got very used to having the thing and it's a convenience. Since it's small, it doesn't always eliminate the need for a cooler on board.

When overnighting on the hook, I turn it down a bit and turn the battery selector over to just one battery. In the morning, I still have enough battery to start the boat. If I leave it on overnight on the coolest setting, it will run the one battery down in about 9 hours.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Very good tips, Dennis.

Just a quick idea... has anyone put an inflatable on their SLX? Like a Zodiac or something? Any way to secure it to the swim platform? I'm assuming that this would be hard to do, but would definitely come in handy ... Let me know

Or could I tow one? It's looking like it would be too wide to lay flat on the swim platform of my 270 SLX... I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas!

Zodiac would come in handy on days like this:

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Agreed.

We live in an area where it would be useful to get into shore with a Zodiac, rather than waiting for a launch everywhere we go. Also, it would be fun to pull it right up on the beach, etc. Do you tow one, ehaze?

As requested by 250SLX, this thread is now the Select EX thread! This should open up this area to 250, 290 and 300 Select EX's... Welcome!

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

nope, have friends with jet skis that we send to get people, beer, or stuff. when i move up to a 360 or 390, i'll looking into buying one.

headed to the boat now to add two more bluetops, 2 bank charging system, replace the hatch switch, and possibly rewire the windlass breaker to a move convenient location.
