Select EX Thread

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

i need some assistance . the ski locker is full of water from washing the boat . I opened both the drain in the ski locker and the garboard drain & and turned on the bilge pump at the same while tilting the boat , i just can't flush the water out .
Has anyone had a similar problem ?

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Yes, I had the same problem. They had to put a new pump inside the ski locker. It is under a cover in the rear of the locker. You can also try moving the pump in case the wires are loose.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

Curious question about production number/percentage compared to other sea ray models.

Just wondering what Sea Ray bases their production of the SLX line on (quantity wise). If you play around or search on really any used boat forum, you don't find near as many SLX used for sale as you do say a 240 sundeck or tons of other models. Another example is I had a 280 Sundancer cruiser before I got my 270 SLX. If you do a search for used 280 Sundancers you will find a ton for sale. I would think that they simply have produced a hell of a lot more 280 sundancers than SLX's.

It makes sense in what is the most popular in selling. Example: If you are buying new, many more could justify spending $100K+ for a cruiser than $100K for a brand new 270 SLX bowrider.

Just wondering if anyone had an idea of the percentage of SLX's built compared to other runabouts?

It's interesting that you cite 2 of Sea Rays most successful and best selling boats in your example. From what I've found out, the SLX line is SR's answer to Cobalt in terms of fit and finish. The 240 Sundeck is maybe the best selling boat SR ever produced, and for good reason. But if someone was just comparing finish, a Cobalt 242 wins all day. The guy that sold me mine said he sells 5 Sundecks to every SLX he sold, but that the buyers were looking for different things.

We wanted a yacht certified bow rider at least 28' long but with a beam of 9'6" or less (has to do with the courtesy docking at our marina - We only have eight 12' slips, but we have sixteen 10' slips and I wanted to be able to dock in those in a pinch). We have friends who had the same requirements and bought a Chapparal. It is like a beefed up version of the 240 Sundeck. IMO the finish of that boat didn't warrant a 6 figure price tag no matter what the size. The SLX is much more luxurious (not the exact word I'm looking for) and at least looks like it should have a 6 figure price tag. I didn't pay anything close to $100K for ours though.

NOthing wrong with that!!!!!!!!!:smt001 I bought mine brand new with I believe every option you can put on a SLX 270 except the bow filler cushion. It just didn't have it and I never ordered it. Anyway, it jacked it up to around $124K+ MSRP. That's not what I paid. It was discounted off the MSRP around 20%+. I added in the Mercruiser extended warranty........ it adds up!!!!!!!

You got one hell of a deal . I paid $120k loaded but without windlass and satellite .I guess they're cheaper stateside .

Highslice : if this is all SR could come up with to rival Cobalt they'd better think again . I love my boat's performance but definitely not up to my expectations quality wise. SR should stick to their Sundeck line and not venture out into luxury territory .Too bad they stopped the SD 240 production and rolled out the 260 instead at a 20% premium .Not a wise move .

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

how is a SLX different from an EX?

(don't think i bothered to ask my sales guy)

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

highslice, wassim, and desperado: what are your top speeds? i have the 496 mag engine as well. NOT the HO (whatever that is!? haha)

just curious about speed comparisons
--- not sure mine is running as well as it should be. brand new

I've got the sports tower which adds some weight and a little drag, but if it's just my wife and I and below a half tank of gas I've hit right at 52 via GPS with her trimmed right.

Honestly though, with a few more friends on board and a full tank of gas I'm still hitting around 49 - 50 GPS.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

god that sounds more like it.

with 2 adults and 2 children on board and a half tank of gas (or a little more)
only about 44-47 GPS.
i know that im trimming the engine properly; however, i could use a bit more work with the trim tabs maybe... any tips??

ps. i dont have the tower option.. so i would expect to get someone closer to 55-56.. i feel like something isn't right. let me know what you think

thanks,
brandon

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

i didn't try with GPS yet . On the speedometer i touched around 53mph with 2 adults on board and 3/4 tank trim half up , flaps up
PS : HO is 425 HP so theoretically i should be able to hit 55mph .

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

2 Adults, 1/2 fuel and full water plus all gear I can hit 54 GPS in a light chop. That's with the out drive trimmed up half way and the tabs fully retracted. No tower, and bimini in its boot.

Typically, with 2 adults and 2 kids full fuel, water and gear I can run up to about 50. But we spend 97% of the time running either 23 -29 pulling tubes or 17 - 25 pulling boarders or skiers.

highslice: when you say your trim tabs are fully retracted... what do you mean? this is my first boat ive owned with tabs, so im still getting used to them. when im on plane... do i want to lower my bow or raise my bow? thats the only terminology i seem to understand, haha.

Re: 270 Select EX Thread

FYI tabs are also used to stabilize the boat , say you want to balance the boat if you have more weight on 1 side

I hardly ever have enough weight on board with the 496 MAG to warrant trim tab use. I rarely touch mine. That being said when you are cruising the more boat out of the water the better. Hence the trim (which the switch is on your throttle) Don't go by gauge but by feel. The gauge has a slight delay and you should learn how she feels anyway. Once you are coming on plane a good rule of thumb is to the bump the trim up for about 2 seconds at the time. If you never increased your trim you will see the boat plowing through the water with water spraying right by the captains chair to your right and left. (this is even with the trim tabs fully up - as I really never touch mine) I am discussing the trim on your stern drive. When you bump it up you should see the spray move more aft as your boat lifts out of the water. The more practice you have you should actually feel your boat "lifting" out of the water. Obviously if there is a large chop or you are going through others wake or the boats starts to bounce too much, just trim it down. If you trim to high you will feel the props cavitate a little. Usually you would then just bump the trim down and all is well.

Practice and feel, practice and feel :)

That means the tabs are in the up or "raise the bow" position. That's where I normally leave them. With the 496 I have never had the boat do anything but jump right on plane even with 10 or 11 people on board. But our lake gets a lot of wind, so when I'm running cross wind I will have to use a tab to lower one side of the bow. Or if everyone decides to sit on the same side of the boat, or I have 8 people in the cockpit and no one in the bow (happens more than I would've thought).

The other time I use them is when pulling a wake board or knee board. Depending on the weight of the rider the proper speed is sometimes such that I need the tabs down to keep the boat on plane.

Desparado's dissertation on out drive trimming is dead on - lots of feel.
