Second test. Still some problems :(

:smt089This is just not my week and it's by birthday on top of that. Sigh....
Got to the lake backed it in and the starter went out!!!!!!!!:smt013

I am going to go drink a beer or 15 now....
Good day.

Let me be the first to say...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thanks Pietro. Well I ran to town and exchanged the starter. It was under guarantee still. The nose cone broke off. So strange. I am going to make one more try in the morning. I have almost 300 miles on the boat since I got it and maybe 2 of them are on the water..

Okie dokie. The alpha and pre-alpha internal pumps are high pressure, low volume pumps. A little problem with the pump gets compounded by the pressure and when you lose a little flow, you lose everything!

Now I've not played with one of these darned things since 1999 when I bought Just Ducky and bade sterndrive problems good bye. But there are a couple of places you need to check. Bottom up, check the intake grate and lower unit passage to ensure it is clear. You can clean it out with a snake working from beneath the pump housing and going down.

Now since you have a full kit pump, the gasket in the upper pump hosing for the copper riser tube should be good. You need to pull the water pocket cover inside the upper housing where the copper tube fits. If the drive was used and previously overheated, the exhaust would have melted the fitting in the upper housing which causes a leak. So pull it out and ensure the gasket for the copper tube is intact and good, that the water pocket cover is true and that the cover to upper unit gasket is good. You can snake out this passage while you have the housing out and the drive off.

The rest of the circuit is probably okay since the problem follows the drive. Otherwise I'd suggest replacing the rubber hose that runs between the transom plate and gimbal housing. Those things leak after a few years. It's also possible that the inner ply delaminates and causes a blockage. Again, probably not your problem. However I am betting that it's the water pocket cover, the rubber seal or gasket. Looks like this.

Thanks for the birthday wishes every one! Just got a bit down today... It's like every thing that could go wrong has. Oh, there was also a fire under the dash today Gezzzzzz.... Any way again thanks for the birthday wishes!

FC3, yes that upper seal was melted. I also found that the A-1 and Pre-A have 2 different bases. I think that is going to have been my problem. I let it run on the hose 30 min tonight and looks as if it's going to be ok... I know the hose adds some pressure. But before I changed the kits last night It was heating up on the hose and now it's not. It may have been2 or 3 problems leading to total system failure. I will know in the morning if all works......

Happy B-day Heather. I know the feeling about today. Went to check my wheel bearings and the inners fell to pieces. Only available through dealer. Oh well, we'll work on it tomorrow night and try to splash the boat on Friday morning.
