I am trying to see if anyone has the paint code match for a gray hulled 420 (I think all gray hulled SR's the same). I know its gelcoat but want to touch up a few scratches without trying to go through a gelcoat repair. Thanks in advance!

I can't answer your specific question, but... is the scratch all the way through the gelcoat into the fiberglass? Meaning, more of a gouge than a scratch? If it's just a scratch, it can buffed out. Small gelcoat repairs aren't that hard, though - you can get the matching (other than fading from UV over the years) gelcoat from Spectrum or your dealer. It just takes a little sanding/polishing to smooth it out.

Yes I know but this does not warrant trying to match 13 year old gelcoat. This hull has been buffed enough. These are small scratches and annoying to me. Thanks for responding.

OK, gotcha. Something else to think about - which you probably already thought of, but just in case... IF anyone should happen to have a paint code (which would not be a "Sea Ray" thing), it would also suffer the same "not matching" issue as new gelcoat. Meaning, any paint code that some out there may have figured out, probably won't be an exact match for you. Gel coat or paint - same issues.

Any chance you have a good autobody shop nearby? Maybe they could help.

Or... use a grey Sharpie! :)

If you go to a art supply store they have hundreds of permanent markers in all shades, these and a small bottle of clear coat touchup paint works wonders. Draw in the scratch with marker and let dry, then go back over with clearcoat/ touchup or even clear nailpolish---This hides a lot of sins.

I saw a blue hulled boat in the Tavelhoist at our marina the other day that had a very small piece of matching blue vinyl tape that was covering a gouge in his hull. If you don't go wild with colored matching band-aids, might be worth trying to find a grey piece of trim tape to cover the scratch. It would be invisible to the eye once in the water and very easy to apply. I like the colored magic marker idea too.

Did you call Sea Ray support? They were able to give me the supplier color code for my 340sda that I gave to Spectrum to match.

Interesting idea here. Probably would not do to the main gelcoat but might in other places.

This is an interest

Any good automotive paint store can scan it and match it.

Yes but not certain how to get boat to automotive paint shop (LOL). There are no easily removable gray pieces on a 420 DA.

I was thinking the same thing with paint shops. If it was the white gelcoat area, there's probably something you could remove. But, if you're friendly with the paint shop, they'll probably let you borrow their books of paint chips. Kinda like what you would get from Home Depot (paint sample cards) - but their books have A LOT more colors.

Try the art store-- markers, paint pens, small jars of acrylic paint, many charts to compare. Go to home depot and get a ton of paint swatches, find something close then off to the art store and draw right on the swatches to see what it looks like dry.,

I believe you have a "Pewter" colored hull. I had an '06 260DA with that same color. I contacted SR and got this number: Pewter-Valspar# 5799E90031.

With that number I was able to find the Spectrum Gel Paste at iBoats and here is their number: New Pewter-F551441AK.

Please verify, but these are likely your codes as well. I repaired several scratches that drove me crazy as well. I was afraid I would sand through the gel coat if I tried wet sanding them out. However, I did wet sand out a lot of small light scratches.

Terrific and thanks Bennett for saving me a lot of time!

Bennett, your post has "Valspar" in it... which is a paint company. You were able to get a "paint" code that matches your gel color from Sea Ray? Wow, first I have ever heard of this. Learn something new, I guess!

As I mentioned earlier, I called Sea Ray and they gave me the color code. In my case it was artic white but they also had two suppliers: valspar and ashland.

From the color code spectrum got me their sku and ordered online from iboats (which may be your only choice).

Kevin, was that the "paint" color code or gel color code?

I realized Valspar was a paint company when they gave that to me. There was no paint involved. Maybe that is a paint code as well, but it is the code I used to get the matching gel coat paste....
