Sad news and really shows the state of the boating industry.

Tonight on Local TN news reports that one of the SeaRay Plants in Knoxville is closing.

"Brunswick Corp. is closing its Riverview boat manufacturing plant in the Forks of the River Industrial Park in East Knox County the company said today.
The plant will stop making Sea Ray boats in the first quarter with production moved to other Brunswick plants in Knoxville and Vonore, Tenn., the company said. About 300 jobs will be eliminated when the plant closes, although the company will try to move as many employees as possible to jobs at other Sea Ray Plants.
The company also plans to cut an additional 275 jobs "throughout Sea Ray manufacturing and product development facilities as well as at Sea Ray's Knoxville headquarters by Friday."
"We have taken a number of actions over the past few years in an effort to mitigate persistent difficult conditions in the global marine market and economy," Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy said in a statement. "These actions have included reduced production rates, as well as virtually halting production during periodic furloughs. The three plants near Knoxville have recently completed a production furlough, which has helped reduce our overall marine pipeline, but the global marine market remains in a severe downturn because of the weakening economies here and abroad and anxious consumer sentiment. These conditions have led to the difficult decision to mothball the Riverview facility."
More details online as the develop and in Wednesday's News Sentinel."

The whole boating industry is in the same predicament. My son is an ABYC cert. boatbuilder and was laid off from Sabre yachts. They are closing their main plant,
Back Cove yachts is downsizing. The Sea Ray
dealer I do business with has been flat with
few sales since last June...which is the case
with all the area dealers. My nephew is a
merc certified Master marine mech. on Cape Cod. He reports many of the marina's and
dealers closing. He is unsure about his job
and he is number 3 rated merc mechanic in the US. Hopefully fuel prices will stay down
and consumer confidence will return along
with money flowing again in the economy.
We should know in the spring. Hope for the best!

A fellow in N.C. just bought Albermarle from Brunswick. It would be nice if the employees could buy that plant and some old molds or designs. I would venture to guess they could make it as did Harley Davidson.

I'm found a nice cockpit TV mount at the boat show in Formula boats and was trying to get some info. When I called biggest Formula dealer in our region I was told that parts department is closed for the winter. I was told to leave voicemail for service guy and they'll try to take care of it. This was a first time I hear something like that. Sounds like things are really bad.

Ask the former Sea Ray employees that started Savannah Yachts how well a venture like that worked out for them......
