My last post to all of you gave me a ton of advice! Thanks

We have found a 190 bowrider. We know we should have it checked out. Now here is our problem...this is our first boat...how do we do this? Do we pay to have someone come to the boat? Do we tow the boat to the mechanic? We understand this should cost us around $200?

How do we find the mechanic? We live in southern Ohio and the boat is in northern ohio.

Thanks!

It is a 1998. Also, do you think 12,000 is a good price?

They put in a bigger engine last year and then had to slow it down, I think a V-8?

thanks for the information

As Quint pointed out, you definitely need to get a survey done. The price of both the boat and survey will vary quite a bit based on geography. That being said, $12K doesn’t sound too bad for that boat depending on its condition. You did mention that it was recently repowered, so that might account for a somewhat higher price.

I would be a bit curious why someone would spend the money to repower a 9 year old boat (with an apparently oversized motor) then sell it the next year. Just something to think about…

He said he has a child now and has to sell. He also said that the boat was too powerful? They had to change something to slow it down?Sorry, it is obvious I don't know much about this. If we have someone look at the boat, do they come to the boat, or do we have to get the boat to their shop?

Usually surveyor comes to the boat...but a small boat like a 190 would be easy to take somewhere if needed. Look on Boat trader & Yachtworld and see what they are going for. I have never heard of an overpowered boat......good luck and welcome to Clubsearay !

That's what I was thinking. I believe the 5.0L was an option on the 190BR. Anything more that that might exceed Sea Ray's weight & HP recommendations. I'm not sure how well a 19-footer would perform with a big old 350. (It would be fun to find out, though!)

Smaller boats like the 190 you would trailer to them for the inspection or pay more and have them come to you. Not sure about the comment on slowing it down????? What kind of engine did they put in it? Also why did they have to put a new engine in it? BIG red flag to me!!!! You need to sea trial it and see how it works for you. Hope this helps.

If you are paying $12k for a 1998 used, how much do you think you could get a new 175/176 with trailer for at a dealer. If you are looking at only say couple of grand more why not take a serious look at a new one. I only paid $14k for my 02 176 with trailer brand new and it came with a 6 year warranty. I traded it 18 months later and got my value back in the trade. Take a look around, 12k for 98 is high IMHO. :smt017

Good luck with your boat. We are also in the process of making a deal. To give you an idea, we are down to 3 boats, 2 2000s and 1 2001, all 185s with 4.3 engines and sport seating. Asking price is between 14 and 14.5K I know I can get one of them for sure at 14K. I had a couple of nice ones in Ohio as well, but it's too much of a drive for us. I have also noticed that the 182s go a bit cheaper. Same hull, just slightly less dressed up and a small difference in cockpit layout. If you are ok with the 18.6 foot hull, I would include them in your search. I've had the best luck with "boattrader" and "craigslist" By the way, the engine change would worry me abit. Doesn't mean it's out of the question, just be carefull.
Good luck!
