Searay bashing?

I've had Doral, SeaRay, Wellcraft, then back to SeaRay but not because I think SeaRay is always better.

The 1984 21' Doral was a good boat, but did have problems with coolers built into the carpet covered, wooden cockpit floor. The plastic framing got brittle with age and broke.

My 1989 268 Dancer was also a good boat, but it felt dated compared to its replacement - a 1987 32' Wellcraft St Tropez. Although the Wellcraft was 2yrs older it was significantly further ahead of the boat evolution scale in my opinion. More fiberglass molded sections vs the dancer's particle board panels held together with screwed on L-Brackets. I was constantly finding screws on the floor from these brackets, but trying to reinstall proved fruitless since the particle board would no longer hold the screws. Water intrusion in the transom was also a problem, but the Wellcraft didn't have a cored transom (although it was a twin inboard). Windshield wipers on the Dancer were mounted directly in the captain's vision, but the Wellcraft's were neatly hidden between the deck and liner. Speaking of the head liner, the Wellcraft's was vinyl while the Dancer - glued on fabric which was impossible to clean once stained. The Dancer's jump seats were infamous for being useless and the back pull out bench was a joke while the Wellcraft's seating was fine. SeaRay still used a clumsy 4 piece cabin door assembly vs Wellcraft's one piece curved plexiglas design that slid open with one hand (kind of like the SeaRay doors not introduced for 5 more years).

All this on a competator's boat that was 2yrs older than the SeaRay! It appeared that SeaRay was resting on their laurel's at this time in their history.

My current SeaRay seems to have corrected most of those issues but I would still prefer NOT to have the carpet glued to the wooden floor and up the walls. A fibreglass liner would be cleaner and easier to change drop in carpets for a new look. It was the overall design of my current boat vs the name that attracted me.

Now if it only had Crusader Engines like the Wellcraft...

I'm purchasing a 2002 34 with 8.1L engines. I've read countless articles on water ingestion, so it's clear I need to have a good survey, mechanics check -up, and detailed maintenance records. Any further insight regarding this model/year...boat characteristics?

Thanks

Marcus, welcome to the forum. Just a tip- It is considered bad forum etiquitte to post the same question in multiple threads, especially when you end up "hijacking" existing threads that have nothing to do with the queston you asked.

Part of the theme here is we *try* the best we can to keep topics within a thread so it is easier for people to see the information later on when looking up the same issue. Multiple threads will spread your prospective answers all over the place and you might miss some good info. The thread you started in the Gas Engines section should do the trick.

Happy New Year!

Any truck will get stuck off road if it has street tires. The X5 was designed with this in mind:

Not to hijack, but to further the point. BMW neither designed nor marketed the X5 to be an offroad SUV. Put the X5 up against almost any other SUV on a road course and you'll understand what BMW was going for.

It's like comparing a 35 Fountain to a 35 Sundancer and then bashing the Fountain for lousy overnight accommodations....

You need a wider slip or more training.

If you watched the video closely there was 3 Z4M Coupes taking off one behind the other. Bad boy toys right there.

What was the X5 Nurburging time? The M3 GTS ran a very fast 7:48 with the famous Host von Saruma driving. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS ran a 7:18 without it's ace Walter Rohrl driving, this is insane for a production street car. Wiki has the fastest lap as the Porsche 956 at 6:06 in 1983!

I don't think SeaRay is a bad boat, this is our 3rd SeaRay and we are generally happy. Had a Bayliner long ago, now that was a bad boat!!

To me the dealer is as important as the manufacture for a boat decision. Boats are nowhere near as reliable as cars, so a good dealer is important. MarineMax Clearwater has been very good IMO.

Ha. What BMW's have you driven? I've driven just about every available brand of car in the US and I can say without a doubt that BMW makes some of the finest cars on the road. I'll go on to say that used BMW's present a great value in the used auto market as well. My BMW is now 14 years old, still looks very current in the styling department, can out accelerate, out brake, and out perform about 85% of the current cars on the market, still gets over 28 mpg on the high way, and has been the best car I've ever owned.

Wife's 335i nice car if you want to get in trouble fast crank up 2009 ZO6 got three tickets in the first month wife said stay driving your truck ha ha

Not entirely sure I agree with that. I worked at the BMW Plant in Spartanburg at the time the X5 began production and I recall them building this track for the X5.
Looks like they thought of everything but wet grass...
