If I saw that coming out of the back of my boat, I'd be turning around and going back to the dock...

I just read the Motor Boating article. The problems I see all have to do with the power plant. The engine room is smaller because It's got V-Drives. I have a hard enough time, as it is, getting around the engine room with straight inboards. V-Drives are OK, but having the engine weight in the middle of the boat really balances her out.

Also, they're using QSC engines, with which I'm very happy in my 15 ton boat, that are just too small an engine block for a 20 ton boat. To get that thing to cruise at around 25-26 MPH, you've got to pump 55 GPH through the engines. That's a lot for an 8 liter engine. And those numbers were with 3/8 fuel, no water, and no "must have" admiral dictated boating stuff and beer. I just don't see it performing like some 48DB's that have blown by me, without beating the hell out of the engines.

Other than that, the boat looks drop-dead gorgeous.

Having to spin those engines up to over 3000 RPM's to get to the rated horsepower can't be good for longevity.

By comparison, at 2100 RPM's, my 480DB goes about 30 - 31 MPH and burns 48 - 50 GPH. And it does not smoke. At 1900 RPM's, the boat goes about 26.6 MPH and burns 40.3 GPH. That is about 16 GPH LESS than the 47DB at the same speed and the 480DB weighs more and goes faster. Huh?! If I put the Cummins QSM-11's up to 2300 RPM's (far less than 3000 in that 47DB), the boat will be going 35-36 MPH... don't have the fuel burn at that setting though but it's over 60 GPH.

As far as range goes, if you leave a 2 hour cruise reserve in the tanks, the 480DB can go a long way (~270 miles) on the fuel tanks (500 gallons). Leaving a 2 hour cruise reserver in the 47DB is going to give a range of less than 200 miles.

Dock boat.
