Sea Ray 5.7L Mercruiser= HEADACHE!!

did you find out what was wrong I have the same issue was it ignition i know it's not fuel i ran fresh gass straight to engine

always always check your Manifolds for damage . The #1 cause of motor failure Is Leaking Manifolds. When your manifold has a leak it can spray water into your motor causing it to back fire and run like crap. Stainless steel one piece manifolds will make your boat run better than it ever did.Mercruiser 5.7 One piece manifolds cost $1900.00 For a Club Sea Ray member. Call back if i can help out.

Nighthawk,

Have you tried the fule pump yet? you are describing the same symptoms I had last year. She ran flawlessly at idle, up to 2500 rpms under load, then sputtered/backfired/died. would always restart and run fine - until you put her under load...

Replaced the fuel pump, and she's good as new.

Keep up updated.

Nighthawk,
Is that a Thunderbolt ignition or Delco HEI? I have the Delco HEI and had the exact same problem. Replaced the electronic fuel pump and ignition control module (regulates the timing) and now all is back to normal.

Check out this web site and select based on your engine type and seriel number. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=8

As stated earlier, Iginition control module fixed the issue for me.. good luck and have faith! http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=809955 97&ivar=images/CRUISER/809955.97/7.png&inbr=2337&bnbr=80&bdesc=DISTRIBUTOR+AND+IGNITION+COMPONENTS

If he had a bent propeller you would recommend new manifolds!
Your "help" is quite transparent. It is obvious what you are trying to do.

I am in the business too but I am not trying to sell stuff here.
If you want to advertise, try a boating magazine or e-bay.

just clean the carb.

You have to think to your self; what could have changed if the boat was working fine, and nothing has moved?

Varnish. That is just about the only thing I can think of, especially since you stated the other maintenance items have recently been addressed.

Did you fog the engine when laying up for the winter? Check the plugs. A guy down the pier form me replaced his plugs and they were the wrong length and he had the same problem. Good luck.

I know this is an old post, but, for those seeking another possible solution to this type of problem and it didn't cost a dime: I had the same problem with an '87 mercruiser 170. The fuel and delivery system checked OK. Points set correctly. Engine timing and dwell good at idle. I removed the distributor cap and found powdery metal filings. I removed the rotor, the plate that holds the points and condenser, and guard which held weights and springs in position. One of the weights was stuck in an outward position and had bee scraping against its mounting. I cleaned the metal powder and lightly lubricated every contact point with a toothbrush and hi temperature disc brake grease. Reassembled, sea tested; full power under load at any throttle setting.
