has anyone ever heard about hull defects on the 270slx? I have a crack along the first strake up towards the bow that runs about 6 feet on both sides of the hull.

Ultimately, back in 2008, the repairs to my boat proved insufficient as the below-the-waterline crack returned. This is one of the very rare times that an entire hull was replaced under warranty. My boat was taken to the Knoxville factory and all the hardware, appliances, tanks, instruments, fittings, etc. were taken off of my boat and installed in a new hull. The new hull has been practically flawless. That same year, the Mercruiser factory team determined that my 6.2 liter engine failed compression testing due to glazed cylinder walls. They replaced the engine with a new short block. So, my boat is really a 2005/2008 270SLX.
