Hi there. I’m interested in purchasing a Sea Ray SDX 270 and wanted to see if people thought this was a good family boat. What are pros and cons of the inboard vs outboard motor other than extra storage? What are the options worth adding? Is it beneficial to buying new? I’m happy to buy a boat a few years old but curious of these depreciate much in this current environment. Thanks for any help - I’m pretty clueless at this point!

I have this boat and have been vocal about on this forum. Search my posts and your will find plenty on the sdx270 specifically.

Can someone weigh in on an OB vs IO and what the pros cons are of each?

Cons: reduced swim platform, price
Pros: better fuel economy, better acceleration, higher top speed, easier maintenance, better for saltwater, simple winterization

We just brought our 270 SDX 300hp OB home a couple weeks ago. We are a family of 5 and we knew that we needed this specific boat. The yacht certification means that we don’t have a maximum person capacity to worry about. Within reason of course. There is a weight maximum with this model but not for people only.

I spent 30 years in Ohio where I/O's were popular and common. I've spent the last 30 years in Florida where outboards are king. I've never understood why, especially when outboards are astronomically overpriced. All my center console fishing boats have been outboards but my current 270 Sundeck with a 496 Bravo 3 is a dream for a pleasure craft. Different strokes...
It's a corrosion thing on the IO's. The outdrive part doesn't come out of the water if the boat stays in a slip. There is so much more that can't be rinsed down especially in the engine compartment. There are more hull penetrations that tend to develop leaks. The Mercruiser exhaust risers are a constant maintenance challenge; replacement every three or four years. Yes there are good reasons that there is a desire for outboards over IO's in Florida.
