SC 5000 to VV703 Question

Thanks - interesting that it came with my 502 yet the install directions don’t show it.

I bummed to find out I need another jbox and cable after talking again with merc. It turns out the drawing I sent you only shows the final box as you drew. Mine has a jbox for each engine and a connection harness between them so I thought connecting to either box would work. After my call today with the guy who made that drawing, said I need another “y” cable and another 4 port.
What the hell it’s only $$$.
I think I have a couple of 6 port J-boxes that I'll never use. Just have to find them.

So ttmott - with my 2 - 4 ways, there is a Harness from each motor on each box(outer). I have a cable that connects both boxes (inner). If I had a six box, could both motors be on one six box rather than two fours? Or does each have power as there is no power wire at my helm.

i ask because it seems this would eliminate my need for a y cable and extra box. When I asked the merc guy today he said he didn’t think it works that way.

i ordered the new 4 port and y cable but am wondering why.

I have seen configurations where both engines terminate into a single J-Box and I have seen and have experience with engines terminating into separate J-Boxes. My boat, for example, has separate J-boxes under the helm and independent cables to separate J-Boxes in the overhead. From a programming aspect for the engine ECM's and SIM boxes what keeps the Smartcraft data separately unique to each engine? That is the question in my mind. I do know, also, that the SIM's are unique between the engines and cannot be swapped. So, if the SIM's are unique and provide unique instances between port and starboard then no doubt a single J-box would work. But, then why would SR go through the expense to have two completely separate systems all the way to the Vessel View and gauges in the overhead? Possibly redundancy. With all that said the SIM's on a diesel engine does not address all of the engine's data and engine's fault codes.

But, I had thought you were only lacking open ports in the J-boxes to implement what you want to do.

So this is what they sent me today - with the understanding the that dual cable plugs into another 4 way like what leeron shows above, not the harness as shown, Thanks for the offer on the six box but I’ll just install it as they state since I already ordered it all.

Appreciate the reply.

Two things - not shown is there needs to be a smartcraft CAN terminator in each J-Box - a yellow capped ten pin plug. Secondly, what about the boat's gauges?
For your year they should be SysLink gauges that are both powered and obtain their data from the VV (master gauge) through the VV display harness.

Interesting - I asked about that (terminator) but he said just the dust caps needed. I’ll double check that.

Also - earlier here I posted that I have the gage solved with the harness shown below (bottom pic).

Ah, right I forgot on the gauges. Was going off the drawing they sent.
Smartcraft requires terminators at each end of the "trunk" line. There can be device drops at the end of the trunk and anywhere in between - up to 20 devices.
Typically on gasoline engines the harness that connects to the engine ECM / that 14 pin connector has a terminating resistor integrated. That is the beginning of the trunk. On the other end, typically on a J-Box there needs to be another. If you should extend the trunk to another J-box then the terminating resistor is installed on the last one.
There are four different ten pin terminating resistors; CAN 1, CAN 2, CAN 1 and 3 and CAN 1,2, 3 For simple systems use CAN 1, 2,3 terminator.

Well this was a bust! I ordered the cable merc suggested and the jbox. The tech told me the only thing wrong with this diagram for me was I needed to add another 4 port at the end of the dual engine cable. The problem is the cable at that end is female and so is the junction box. The two connectors on the other end will plug into my two jboxes, but now what??
I still don’t understand if I have a cable between my boxes now, why do I need another jbox…..?
Any input is appreciated.

I understand your question about the need to connect the j-box's with the Y cable and the link cable but unfortunately cannot give you a good answer.

With regards to your cable gender issue, All of my j-boxes have male pins on all the ports. Are you certain your new J-box has female pins?

Well after several emails with Merc today, it turns out they have a "male to male" cable (which I incorrectly stated Female earlier) which will correct my issue.

I believe my system should look like this. No terminators are required per Merc, only dust caps. I will update once I have this thing running.
