SB400 (2003) - Microwave Removal/Replacement

Hi all,

I did post a question on the "Microwave Swap" thread, to which Pierpressure1 was kind enough to tell me what needs to be done, but I'm still stuck on how?

Here's the issue. The Sharp Carousel microwave needs to be replaced. I've read some great suggestions on the previously mentioned thread about what alternatives fit, which is great... the issue I have is how to remove the existing microwave?

Apparently I need to remove the fridge first and get to some screws which secure the underside of the microwave?... makes sense... HOWEVER, when I try and slide the refrigerator out, the top flange gets stuck under the trim below the microwave (see pics, which I hope help tell the story?)... I thought maybe the refrigerator flange needs to be removed, but it's either not, or it's rusted/seized in place, as I couldn't budge it - not that I tried too hard, for fear of damaging the fridge).

I'm hoping there are some out there who can help?... thanks in advance!

Hello, The trim pulls off to make clearance for the fridge to slide out. It's held on with Christmas tree clips. Work it down slowly and carefully to avoid breaking them.
Also, if you post 400DB questions in the 40 sedan bridge forum, it will usually be answered very quickly, very knowledgeable base there.

Yep, carefully pull the trim down. When you pull the refer, clean the back with special attention to the 2 fans. Cleaning them can cut some noise down. Remove the micro by removing screw that hold the base the remove the micro from the base once it’s out. Have fun!

I have a set of these for just this purpose. They are a lifesaver. If you break one of the trees off on the trim, you have to pull the material off of the "front" side to replace it. Can be a nightmare. Cheap tool = much less frustration! Good luck.

Thanks... will DEFINITELY invest in a set of those... in the meantime I used a combination of a paint scraper and large flat-bladed screwdriver... was fiddly but got the job done, as you can see... now I need to figure out the best microwave/oven to reinstall?... all and any suggestions greatfully received!

I posted this on the main forum, as well, but just to close the loop completely, I thought I ought to include it here too, in case it helps any newbies out there that, like me, are still figuring out how these great boats have been put together (and, therefore, what we need to do to take them apart/replace various items)… when I was looking to replace the old (ancient) white 0.9 cu ft Sharp Carousel microwave on my 2003 SB400, I couldn’t find anywhere that clearly documented what, where, when and how… so, see attached my annotated photo record of what I did together with how I did it… if anyone’s interested, I replaced it with a (stainless) 1.3 cu ft Panasonic microwave: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DPZD2MO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1...
