We just got back from a 3 night trip to Longboat Key Moorings Marina. I had just received my new GoPro 3 Black video camera and thought I would give it a try. The camera takes amazing video. We arrived at Longboat marina Tuesday afternoon and stayed by the pool for a while. The following day we went north and west to Egmont Key. We also went into St Armonds Circle for dinner. What a fun place and beautiful water. We took the ICW all the way from Sanibel, it seems without counting our lunch stop at the Crows Nest in Venice it was around 4 hours. I mounted the camera on the windshield and also the stern on the sticky back quick release mounts that came with the camera.

Makes me want to live there.

Jim,

That was great!. Hope to see some of that myself when I head down to Anna Maria Island in June for 2 weeks. We always end up renting a boat for at least 1 day, and either ride up to Egmont, or south toward Venice.

Hey Jim!
Great video. We live in Tampa, and would love to take a trip to Sanibel- one of our favorite spots.

What was your average speed through the ICW?
How long total, if you added it up, (actual time moving) do you think it would take from Egmont Key to Sanibel?

Thanks!

Been down in that area many times, love the area.

From Sanibel to Longboat Key I showed about 5 hours total travel time. The milage was 82 miles from our homeport at Sanibel Harbour Yacht Club to Longboat Moorings Marina. There are a lot of no wake zones between Venice and Sarasota Bay. Then it is another 22 or so miles to Egmont. Most of the trip above Charlotte Harbor to Sarasota Bay is limited to 25 mph when out of the no wake zones. My guess at a total time would be 6 hours on the ICW if you didn't have to have any bridges open for you. There are 2 or 3 bridges that could be close for you. We can go under all of them.

If you can go on the outside from Tampa Bay to Venice inlet you would save a lot of time. There are lots of restaurants to stop for lunch along the way. It is a fun trip.

Thanks for sharing, nice video! We do the run the other way, love it down in your area and at Captiva too. Our last trip to Captiva from Bradenton Yacht Club running the outside took about 4 hours and coming back we came up the ICW because of hurricane Irene which took us about 6 hours. Just wonderful places to boat here, we're all lucky who live here:)

Jin and Sue 60: Great video. We liveonly about 15 miles from Egmont and really got a kick out of your underwater shots. We now see those Florida Sea Slugs on the beach at Shell Key. Thanks for sharing. Bruceand Ines Griffith

We've boated many times from NE St. Pete to Cabbage Key and taking the ICW was around 5 to 5 1/2 hours. We went the outside twice and it cuts your time down to 4 1/2 hours. So you save maybe 30-45 minutes but burn more fuel. Too bad Beggar the Dolphin passed away. That was one of the best things while cruising through the ICW near Sarasota. He would swim with your boat and lay on his back begging for food. That was some smooth water for Egmont. Seems like the weekends with boat traffic it's much rougher.

LOL, burn more fuel running outside, that's an understatement in our case, just could not believe the difference, makes "cocktail speed" very attractive:) Know what you mean about the dolphin, he was just great to see swimming alongside we miss him too-:(

Agreed, plus you get to relax and look at the cool scenery along the way. I figure I'm boating and heading down south for a fun-filled few days why rush and my guests can sit back and enjoy some cocktails.

Nice video! OMG the water. You put some kind of filter on that GoPro? We anchor at an island beach here too and swim, but goggles are pointless; I might as well be swimming with my eyes closed. That's some beautiful territory.

The funny thing is if you go 30 minutes north into St. Petersburg or Tama Bay you lose that color and clarity. One of the reason we like going south.

Tom,

You're not kidding about that! That's one of the things that strikes us when we rent a boat down there, and then come home to the Potomac. The difference is night and day!

Thanks for all the nice comments all.

No filter on the camera just the water proof housing.

Second that!

Down here on Sanibel our water is not the clearest. When we head north towards Cayo Costa the clarity gets better (on the outside). Stump Pass (Englewood) area water clarity is amazing! Our redeeming factor here is that it is Sanibel:) If we want to get into clearer water to the south Keewaydin Island on the north side of Capri Pass at Marco Island is wonderful. We have so many different areas we can go and stay out of big water and winds. We actually have a list of 30 restaurants we can boat to in within 1.5 hours.

I think if I were ever to go boating in water like that, I'd be looking for a new job and trying to move as quickly as possible. Better just to stay away. :smt001
