Sandy Hook to Green port..

Thanks everyone loved the trip... Going up was a little rough, the Long island sound was prob 2 to 4ft seas with a n wind so had to slow up for a while so delayed the trip by only 1hr longer... I thought i would have burned a lot more fuel then i did.. I stopped at Mt Sini, Ralph's fishing station for fuel... Nice guys there and great fuel 93... Mitchell park marina was great except for the pump out not working.. And I would def say if your going up there go over to shelter island to Salt.. Nice place and nice marina..They charge you 20 bucks for the slip and tip 20 to the girl that ties up your boat for you.. Just make sure you bring at least 6 lines for salt... I will try to post pics soon.. There are some beautiful boats up there!!!! Def doing the trip again next year same time same place!!!! with maybe a extra stop over at block, Well see!!!

Last time I tried to go to Greenport Brewer's was all booked up with an event. They're all booked up again with another. Looking at Mitchell Park now based in part on your good experience.

How far is it from the docks to the bathroom / shower area? Part of my group has a hard time walking far - they won't be too thrilled if the bathrooms are a hike. I need to be on one of the floating docks vs. a fixed bulkhead.

There all floating docks...I think.... There actually concrete floating docks witch never saw before... But no matter what part of Mitchell park your in.. Its def a long walk to the bathrooms and showers... I was surprised, Prob a good 5 min walk... Hope that helps...

I just did the same trip.
Mitchell Park Marina is nice but as said bathrooms are a far walk.
Stayed at Island Boatyard in Shelter Island on Monday where Salt is.
Great marina well protected nice views and a pool.
Definitely going back to there next year.

Yes loved the marina at Shelter Island.... Ran over there for lunch one day to salt.. Great place Friendly people and great food... Def doing the trip next year around the 4th of july.. Trying to have a stop over at Block. Never been there...

I was faced with the same choice last weekend and chose to go the longer way through the sound. The ocean forecast was less than ideal.[/QUOTE]

If you were in the sound on Saturday, that was less than ideal as well. Came home down the sound weekend before last with 4 to 6 footers. Don't let the sound fool you. The good thing is, if the going gets too rough, you can always go into one of several ports along the way

Sorry it took me so long to post pics from last years trip... Here are some...

Now this years trip we are thinking of leaving on the 4th of July or the day after... Staying at the same marina very nice place... But we want to go to Montauk for the day... Looks like should only take a little over a hr... Just not sure where to go or eat... any suggestions

Beautiful pictures of Greenport and your trip. We keep our boat at Brewer/Safe Harbor in Greenport. It looks like you were at the town Marina. Not sure if you checked out Townsend Manor or the two Brewer/Safe Harbor Marinas. All three are more protected, have pools, restaurant/bars and much nicer bathrooms etc... You will also have a lot more privacy from the tourists in town. The nice part about Mitchell Park town Marina is it is literally in the center of town. The others are a few minute walk away. (Brewer offers a shuttle)

As far as Montauk, you are right. It's about an hour ride dock to dock but you might want to stay a couple of days for two reasons. First, a transient slip for a few hours Fourth of July week may not be so easy to find. Most marinas in Montauk usually have a 2 or possibly 3 night minimum for the 4th. The second reason is like Greenport there is a lot to do & see and many good restaurants. The Montauk Yacht Club used to allow boats to tie up for free or a nominal charge if you ate at their restaurants. I am not sure if they still do this and if they would even have a spot for a short tie up 4th of July week.

PM me and I would be happy to share local knowledge for Greenport & Montauk.
