San Francisco

One day, huh? There is so much to see and do in SF it would be hard to advise for one day but here goes.

Because you like boats I would suggest doing the tourist thing and hit Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. It's iconic, touristy and on the water. If you still have time you could do a Bay Tour/Cruise or walk up to Ghirardelli Square from that area. If you plan ahead there is always a visit to Alcatraz.

For something a bit less touristy but still boat-y I would consider going across the GG Bridge and exploring Sausalito. Many, many great restaurants and bars, lots of boats and one of the biggest West Marine stores in California.

Be sure and dress in layers as the bay can be chilly in the middle of summer if the fog and clouds are blowing onshore as they usually are. Mark Twain said it best, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Not sure about our plans for July, but you might think about re-posting this or sending me a PM when you are headed our way. Goliard II lives in Emeryville which is right on the Central Bay.
In general, I like the Hyde Street Pier, (www.nps.gov/safr/learn/historyculture/historic-vessels.htm) and of course Fisherman's Warf. They are building a Tall Ship in Sausalito called the "Mathew Turner". The tent is right near where I took my captains class, and the people were very nice to me and let me poke around some when they were laying the keel. It is also vey close the Bay Model, which is pretty interesting. You could easily spend a day just walking around Pier39, Fisherman's Warf, Ghirardeli, and the Hyde Street Pier.

Get up to Seattle and I'll take you out on Puget Sound for the day........

These guys have great suggestions for you. I'm going to second the bay delta model at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It's a working model of the bay and delta. I thought it was interesting.

Only a few blocks away from that are the houseboats of Sausalito. Some very interesting creations on those docks!

Great city. I second the Sausalito tour. If you like to paddle, you can rent a kayak or sup from the beach, just south of the marina.

next time I am up,there I would like to see that tidal model. I heard it was great.

I'd definitely skip Fisherman's Wharf and head up to Sausalito or Tiburon. One of my favorite restaurants these days is Range. SF is such a great city!

Sausalito...fish tacos and cold corona, waterside. That is a must.

Take the ferry from San Francisco to Sausalito or Tiburon and Angel Island. Great view from the Bay.

Buena Vista Cafe on the wharf....it's where Irish Coffee was introduced into the U.S.....or so they claim.

For some reason I want to call Shenanigans on that claim...
