Have a 2001 380 DA which is mostly original. Today while working on the boat and listening to my Clarion XMD1 stereo I heard a loud popping noise from the salon overhead speaker and the salon speakers quit working (Forward stateroom and cockpit speakers remained functional). Pulled the seat cushion off and found the pictured

amplifiers installed. Am a little confused about the two different amps and their functions. Can someone educate me and head me in the proper direction to troubleshoot the loss of salon speakers? Thanks.

It appears, possibly, the popping and loss of one of the speakers if from that RCA jack coming out of the Clarion amp.
I suspect the Clarion amp is for down below and the Alpine is for the cockpit.
The Alpine looks as if it is powering 4 speakers and the Clarion another 4 speakers.

This may be a worthless observation but your first pic shows a fair amount of oxidation on the connections. Is there something leaking around that area? Or is this potentially normal for salt boats?

Actually that is the corrosion prevention spray Sea Ray uses for electrical connections. I think it is Boeshield T5.

Same setup I have in my 2001 410. The silver Clarion Amp runs your cockpit speakers, and possibly your subwoofer. The other smaller amp is your salon/vberth speakers.

The CMD1 head unit is 2 zones...1 zone is split to feed 2 l/r channels (4 channels total ) on the clarion amp. The other zone feeds the 2 channel amp for the salon/vberth.

in this age of boat, it could be the head unit, amps or speakers. I would swap some wires around to see if I could isolate which component is faulty. The feed from the head unit to the amps are RCA cables, just untape and swap.

Thanks for the feedback. I found my DC Wiring Schematic and it shows the head unit directly driving the salon/forward cabin speakers without going through an amp and an amp driving the cockpit/arch area speakers (No indication of two amps on the schematic.) However, the second amp is definitely original and could have been an option when the boat was new. Will swap the connections and see what I come up with and will pass along the results.

Most every amp has a power on indicator light. Do you see a light? Some amps have a protect-mode light that indicates the amp is power on, but sees a problem. Can be the same bulb but different color or a different light. See one? You can power up the system with the RCA disconnected from each amp, one pair at a time, to find witch amp powers the suspect amp. Once you know which amp powers the speakers that are out, you can narrow down the testing.

Continued the troubleshooting today by swapping the channel inputs to the amps to isolate the issue. dtfeld is correct - the two channel installed amp feeds the salon speakers and the Clarion 4-channel amp feeds the cockpit speakers. Turns out that one side of the cockpit speakers are inop as well as one side of the salon speakers. Appears the XMD1 stereo head is at fault. Any recommendations on a replacement system (head and amp)? Would keep my existing speakers and replace the two current separate amps with a single amp, if possible. Thoughts? Thanks.

Lots of folks on here love the JL and Fusion head units. Some others are Clarion groupies, so they stick with Clarion. The XMD1 is so old you will NOT be able to re-use any remotes (in case you were hoping), so there's no need to stick with Clarion, unless price is an option. Personally, when I upgrade my XMD1 I plan on a Fusion or JL Audio head unit. Whatever you get, make sure it has Bluetooth, so you can stream from your phone. And I'm going to get one with a NMEA 2000 interface so that you can control the unit from a compatible chart plotter. Then you don't need a remote on the helm any more!

Might as well toss in Kicker and Wet Sounds for head unit options.

The Wet Sounds HTX-6 would take the place of those 2 and 4 chnl amps. However, the power cabling to either of those, is substandard. The Kicker KXMA800.8 would also work, and give you two extra chnls to power more speakers or a mild woofer.

Check out Rockford Fosgate! I installed a complete Rockford system in my 42 Sundancer with all new head unit, amps, sub, and all speakers. VERY impressed with quality. Other high end manufactures are going with Rockford today.
