the Admiral and i are both excited and sad at the same time...we have just purchased a 2001 340DA and really like it so far...we are going to adapt to the cruising life style very nicely i think....we thought about keeping our 1998 215EC to enjoy water sports with the kids and grandkids and to be able to explore new lakes, but after we thought about it for a while we decided to sell the 215EC instead...we know that it would not get used very much and it is too nice of a boat to sit unused and start deteriorating....we have really enjoyed the time we have spent on the 215....it has been a great boat...a guy i work with showed some interest in the boat so i gave him what i thought was a fair price based on the condition of the boat and upgrades i have done and he accepted the price immediately....i am sure those of you that have owned and enjoyed a boat for several years and then sold it know the feelings we have....i think these fellings may be a little deeper for those of us that choose to work on our own boats since that requires spending a lot of time with the boat....i have learned a lot about boats from working on the 215 with the help of the forum and good friends....the good news for me is i will to remain active on the forum in the future, just focusing on a differnt size/style boat....

not really sure why i wanted to share this with the group....i guess it is just comforting to know that others know exactly the range of emotions we are experiencing.....

Cliff, I can definitely relate to your feelings. I REALLY felt that when my first 330 got totaled by a BUI boater. When they hauled it away it really hit me hard. Those feelings were somewhat mitigated when I got a very nice check from his insurance company to buy another one with.

Just a new chapter....you're going to love it. The 340DA is one of Sea Ray's most popular for a rason. You will be able to enjoy boating, doing things you couldn't do in the 215.

Cliff - Welcome to that wacky, weird, wonderful syndrome called, "Footitis". It happens to most of us and I'm afraid you have it. Feeling sad about getting rid of the old one even with a new one selected means you have it really bad. I'm afraid there is no cure. In a few years you will be telling us about the 44' you found but how much you are going to miss the 340.

Good Luck my friend and welcome to the illness.

Shawn

Cliff,

Congrats on the quick and easy sale! I definitely understand how you feel, but you've got a great new boat to ease the pain.

Mike

We bought a waverunner to fill the gap.

Congrats on the new (to you) 340! I don't know what it is about boats but there is this emotional attachment that I don't think you can ever shake. I've loved every boat I've owned and regretted selling them all. If only I could own a marina...I would keep them all and add to the collection. I love my current boat and would love to keep it forever but it won't be the last.

Cliff, congrats on stepping up in size. I know the feeling about the attachment you get to the boat having worked on the engine and systems yourself. I do pretty much all my own work also, from mechanical to upholstery. The Admiral and I really enjoy our 270, I'd like larger, but it just doesn't fit our lifestyle and budget right now. Good Luck with her and enjoy.
Cliff

thanks for the replies.....i have owned and sold many 'project' cars and trucks over the years and always developed somewhat of an attachment to them so i guess it is the same with the 215...i suppose it stems from the sense of pride and satisfaction you get when you make a repair or an upgrade that enhances the boat or car or truck....i am sure the 'excited' emotions will quickly overtake the 'sad' emotions we are experiencing as we continue to personalize the 340 to our taste and spend more and more time on her....

Bill,
the new owner does know about CSR....i told him how it is a very valuable resource....he told me he had already found the web site and had begun reading the active and archived post....i am sure he will officially join soon...

As the OP touched upon getting rid of custom project cars and replacing them, I was almost to tears when I traded in my vette which I spent so much time and money on upgrading it.

Its funny, even the very nice new car I purchased couldn't quite cure the sting. The best part of it all is no more CRAPPY chevrolet service. Ugh.

The person that coined that phrase about the "The 2 happiest days...." was not a boater. I have loved every boat I have owned and cried like a baby when I sold one. I loved my old Cobalt so much that I just bought it back after 15 years.

Thanks for sharing...I actually wonder how my previous boats are doing...are the owners taking care of them, etc. I know it's a boat, but you do put something personal into all of them...

my first boat was a 1986 Chris Craft 18.5' bow rider. it was in exceptional condition for its age. when we bought the 215EC we decided to give the Chris Craft to my brother-in-law. he and his family of a wife and 4 kids were thrilled and we were excited for them. unfortunately he did not take care of the boat and frequently left it out in the weather unprotected. after a couple years the interior vinyl started splitting and the deck started getting some soft spots. then he had an issue with the heat exchanger (closed cooling) but ignored it and finally ruined the engine.

all i could do was watch in disgust and dissapointment. i tried to talk to him about how to keep the boat maintained to no avail. i had to watch it die a slow death.

Your going to like the 340 I think the 330/340 of 1998-2002 era are some of the best boats SeaRay has built. As far as getting attached to boats, I hear you, I am usually not in good shape after I sell a boat or car.

Are you on Lake Norman or Wylie?

I'm around the corner from you at Lake Norman Marina - enjoying that part of the lake, kept the 290 at the Peninsula Yacht Club.

bought the 340 from a member of the PYC....we looked at LNM but don't think the 340 would fit under the 150 bridge or the train trestle....we like that part of the lake also....not nearly as busy as the lower half....we live in lancaster so we can use Hwy 16 to get to the marina....much easier than using I77 on the east side of the lake....stop by some time...we are the third slip from the right in 'D' dock if you are looking at the dock from the water...

My wife cried, literally, as I was pulling the 260 out of her slip for the last time to head up for the trade-in/pick up. I on the other hand didn't cry then, but I do now every time I go into the bilge to work on something or when I pull up to the fuel dock!
