i have an 88 s24 sorrento and im looking into doing a threw haul exhaust head work and a cam has anyone done any of these? i was wondering more about the threw haul ive talk to a few people and they say thats the one of the best that your can do. i found a local company willing to make the pieces i need but since its all one off its going to be kinda pricey, and i like to buy a kit that has everything i need and all the measurements i need to do the job. thanks for any input

I had an 87 S-24 with the 260 MC. I looked into this several years ago and was told by a very reputable marine performance shop in Southern Cal that the GM small blocks do not realize a significant gain in HP or performance to justify the expense with thru-hull exhaust. This is different on the GM big block motors. But if I remember, that motor was not available in the S-24 until 1989 when it also came with the Bravo drive.

This is a tough call. You are basically spening the money for a boat that makes more noise but doesn't noticably go any faster.

well i know id like to do it myself but i could only imagine that letting the boat breath threw a little more than basically a 2 inche hole would have to make a bigger difference. i want to do a little more than just the exhaust my heads need redone and i was going to have them worked a little and do a cam. im looking for huge gains but i think the boats a little sluggish for pulling multiple skiers like we like to do. but thanks for your input im really on the fence and thats one no.

I don't want to rain on your parade and you are going to do what you want but here is my advise.

This was one of my favorite boats until I bought my most recent one. My wife and I had it in Southern Cal and she took us to Catalina Island (26 miles of open ocean) many times. We spent weeks on her overnight and she never let us down. When we moved to Las Vegas we took her to Lake Mead and for us, she was the perfect boat for the lake. We towed skier's, kids on tubes and had a grreat time with her. We used her for what she was designed to do.

This boat was not designed to pull multiple skiers. It is designed as a great all around boat that you can camp on, use a a day cruiser, fish from and even pull a skier.

Over the years there have been many, many articles written about good people that bought the wrong boat and now want to make it into something it was not meant to be. Also, the rule of thumb is that you can expect to pay about $1000 on performance upgrades for every 1 mph gained. Yep, you read that right. Other than spending $4-600 for a new stainless prop, possibly a 4-blade, I would put your money into making sure that the engine runs perfectly.

If you want a boat that goes 60 and pulls multiple skiers you should have bought a boat that is already capable of that task. Don't waste time and money trying to make a boat into something it's not capable of doing.

If you want a wife that is 5'6" with long blonde hair and green eyes you aren't going to marry a brunette that is 5'2", brown eyes and short hair. How easy do you think it would be to convince the brunette to dye her hair, wear color contacts and high heels....I hope you get the picture.

One other thing to consider is resale value. People don't like to buy boats from private owners that have made a lot of performance engine modifications themselves.

Good Luck.

the boat is amazing and has never let me down i love it. i understand what your saying about the blonde and brunette and as far as that goes shes the blonde i always wanted but its the few lonely times you want the brunette that always get to you. i have been looking at resale value in it alot and kinda planning on a larger boat again next winter possible so i think im going to leave her alone and just enjoy her as much as i can. thank you for your input

Mike,

Is your boat red or brown? I can't tell from the picture. Ours was brown and we did a lot of work to her to make her look and run as good as possible. If I can track down some of the pictures I will post them.
