Rust on Riser and how difficult to remove 5.0 MPI

Smitty - You are reusing your manifolds? Maybe that is why they did not send the gaskets? Just make sure they are not hidden in the paper stuffing. Do you think the plating is enough coating?

Yes I am reusing the manifold because they were in good shape...and I did order the gaskets separately but they are not in any of the packaging...The coating appears pretty good...Guess we'll find out in a few years

Mike...Did you get everything in and run her this weekend? I did mine on Saturday. Took me 4 hours total. Ran the engine and discovered water shooting out of the risers on both sides. Took a look and realized that I didnt put pipe plugs in. (the original risers didn't have these holes) Plugged them up, re started the boat and let her run for 1/2 hour. Came up to 180 degrees then the thermostat opened and temp dropped back down to 170. Kept an eye on her and she ran great. Hope yours went easy.

OMG, that is too Funny--I did the same thing.

I'd have to see it for sure but I seem to recall those 'plugs' are like one way check valves that act as a vacuum break to keep water from entering the engine.

I'll post a pic tomorrow. Cant seem to load it from my home Mac computer.

@Smitty - Yes, I got mine done Saturday also. Probably took me a little longer than 4 hours, since I had two engines to do. Started them up Sunday morning and had one riser clamp to tighten and one of the plugs. I re-torqed and hopefully all should be good. I just need to vacuum up some rust chips left over in the bilge and wipe it down. I am thinking the new bolt setup will make it much easier to clean these out in a couple years.

@ Doug...Here is one of the plugs. There was one located on each side of the risers. I assume I was just supposed to plug them up since there were no hoses or anything that went on the oem risers.

Smitty - it's all looking good! Just wanted to add one word of caution. The clamps you used to secure the rubber bellows... you used two clamps, which is correct. But ideally, you want the actual clamps to be rotated 180* from each other for the best seal. It's not imperative to change it right away - just whenever you get some time.

Looks great, thought! Congrats on sticking with this and getting it done yourself!

Hey Mike, by the way, thanks for showing a picture of that cool stud remover tool you used. I'll be picking one of those up, soon!

Were there any holes in that plug? If so, it's the anti-siphon valve.

If not, then I'm not sure... maybe just a plug or a hole for different application.

Dennis,
That stud puller is a Craftsman. I have had it forever. I hope they still sell it.
I think I am also guilty of the hose clamps. I put them all back on rotated 180, except on the Y pipe, since I never really removed those. Mine were just like Smittys.
Mike

I'll rotate the hose clamps. No holes in the plugs. I have to thank everybody for their input! Much appreciated and it really helped me out. Especially using the cut studs to hold those damn manifolds in place when installing!
