Last Saturday, I was the Helper as a neighbor ran antifreeze thru both of his 2006 8.1 HO (420 HP) engines. He uses a "bucket" set up and a thoroflush mounted to the top of his Perko Strainers.

I've winterized my boats, and many others, just like this for years and never had a problem. But because I was the helper this time (read as the monkey in the bilge) I got "friendly" with the engines during the process. His bucket setup uses (I think) 1/2 ID hose....(the same ID hose used on a washing machine water supplies...whatever that is)....

BOTH engines experienced the same anomaly....the left side elbow/manifold was very HOT throughout the entire sucking of the AF. The right side elbow/manifold started out hot, but you could feel it cool off, and it was cool to the touch, by the time we sucked in the 6 gallons of AF.

It's kind of obvious that not enough AF went through the left side. The question is, did ANY AF go through the left side and if not, why? Is the diameter of his bucket's hose too small? Why the left side and not the right side? From being in his bilge many times, I am positive that this same issue is not there when running from sea water thru the seacocks.

later,
dom
