Rough Water Performance!

Hopefully this is a freind of yours or I'd be mad if you ran so close to me in open water and rough seas. Let alone cut in front of me.

That's nothing on our ride back from LI to NJ last year I followed Alex F so close I could practically hand him some grey poupon, and it was rougher than that...
 
This is nothing more than a slightly bumpy ride when a dancer barely gets some occasional spray on the windshield. My 320DA had seen much heavier stuff. Try it when a Bridge boat gets her windshield covered to the point where visibility is gone for minutes while the water runs down from the arch down the windshield (no windshield wipers). As Rod reminded, that ride was about 6 hours.

Yeah, my radar was giving me "Dangerous Target" alarm every minute or so, I had to program it "It's ok, it's Rod...he's with us". :grin:

I have to disagree. I had 2006 48 for several years. The reason we moved to the 58DB was the way the 48 handled in heavy seas. It is a rough ride in 2 to 3 feet if they are on the bow. The other issue is that if you notice how the bow drops down. When in very heavy seas 6 to 8, the boat has a tendency to stuff the bow. I unfortunately had the pleasure of doing this 3 times. It is not fun. Twice in the gulf stream and once returning to cape coral from key west.

Otherwise the boat is absolutely awesome!

This was rough for us same trip as Alex was talking about these where taken as we ran for the Inlet and out of the Atlantic, 5 hrs was enough.

Ken,

How was the boat responsive to the tabs? Did you try bringing them all the way up to raise the bow? There are number of ways to bring the bow up, I was just wondering what worked for you and what didn't. I just can't imagine that yacht like 480DA would have a hard time in the conditions you describe.

I never drove the vessel, so I'm just trying to understand the problem a little better.
 
Tabs won't help in those types of conditions. Depending on the height and distance between waves, as you drop down one side, the bow has a tendency to plow through the following wave.

We obviously tried numerous changes to speed and attitude. The front of the bow is just too close to the water.

Again we loved the boat. I cannot describe the adventures and sights we have seen in a post, but it was definitely a fair weather boat.

As we all know, watch the wind and weather. However, the longer you boat the higher the chances are the forecasts will be wrong.

As a side note, look at a SF from the side and the 48DA. I think this will explain the issue.

"reverse sheer" is a design element used by people who know how to make really good-looking boats, but who never take those boats into nasty water. Classic form-over-function.

Ok....I'm mostly a River Boater but have gone Scuba Diving in 10ft seas in the Keys on a bad day. Tried diving off Jersey in 20ft rollers but turned around and headed back to port. The boat's name was Thunder Horse I think....converted 45ft oil rig crew boat with twin turbo cats, Mike.

for that boat looked like a normal day.I came back from watch hill fire island last summer,the water was over my arch the whole trip,couldn't see out the windshield even with the wipers on.I told my wife at least the radar was clean after the trip.almost lost the camper back from the wind and my buddy with a 32 carver traveling with us lost his front windshield canvas.was a strange morning on the great south bay?never seen the bay that rough and white...
