I have a friend that swears in running Rotella 15w40 in his "gas" 454 engines on his boat. Has anyone heard of using this oil? I have always related Rotella to diesel applications.

i have run 15/40 in my engines for years . big blocks, small blocks, lawn mowers, atv's, boat engine's, cars and trucks, big diesel truck's. I own a construction company and that is all we use and we never have any oil related engine issue's. We use Amsoil in all of our engines except our large equipment(big diesel engines) we use Rotella in those . the only engine I have that gets lighter oil is in a corvette and that gets mobil 1 5/30. My 454 inboards in my sea ray have about 1300hrs on them now and run great. my last boat had crusader 350's and ran very well with 15/40 rotella. most rental companies use 15/40 in their shops to service their engines. I am located in the northeast and with our temperatures, it is a good choice.

I just switched to Rotella 15W-40 about two weeks ago and only put about an hour and a half on the boat before pulling it for the winter. I haven't noticed any differences yet.

The additive Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (often referred to as ZDDP) is disappearing in oils. Rotella still has it, however it is less than before or you can purchase it as an end item. I know folks who will run nothing but Rotella (or Delo) in their gassers.

I'm going to run Rotella T1 straight 30W in my 454. My 270 is only in the water May through October. Merc 25-40 has just priced it's self out of business with me. 8 quarts = (2) one gallon jugs works for me. Shell is one of the best oils out there and use their own base stock, Mike.

Now I'm looking at Delo 400 15W40 or Rotella 15W40 that have both been highly recommended for HDO Gas Engines. Will the straight 30W give me more consistent oil pressure hot and cold or is there no difference?....Mike.

The multi-viscosity oils (15W-40) will give you better protection at engine startup.

The heavier weight single weight oils don't start flowing well until the engine is at operating temperature. Engines need oil thin enough to flow when the engine is cold and still sufficiently thick when the engine is hot. Enter 15W-40 and its ability to protect your engine from startup to operating temperature.

Use rotella in my durmax for 4 years and love it. never used it in the boat but why not, it is an indusrty leader.....

I heard the other day that Rotella oil has a certain chemical that we need for our older engines and it is lacking in many of today oils. Is this ZDDP that stuff Dave? Oh, I have run it in my powerstroke for 11 years now.

This mechanic also said we should start our older 454's and run them at a slightly higher rpm to splash oil on the crank or something until they warm up. Any idea what he was talking about?

Ohsnow, lover your swimplatform ;) That was my best boat accessory purchased to date.

Just bought two gallons of Delo 400 15W40 for $11 a gallon. It seems a bit thicker/heavier than 25W40 merCruiser and probably a better oil for cruisers in general. The straight 30W seemed really heavy, Mike.
