Roof Collapse 2005 420/455 DB Help!

Maybe its a where do you stop at (along with due diligence) kinda question - what is enough?

When they tell you that you need to start work on your asteroid impact emergency preparedness plan..... :smt101

My last employer had a zombie outbreak business continuity plan. It started as a joke but then ate about 20 man hours.

Holy crap! Woody you did not just sorta, kinda, maybe, see my point.....and help me make an arguement? I'm stunned, we agree on something. Lol
There should be no ‘sides’ in this discussion. All I was suggesting was a helpful reminder. The OP has a serious hand wringing situation going on, let’s not garbage up his thread anymore than it already is.

I just put up a new building. When the snow load subject came up I told them I wanted to increase it 50%. The last couple years have been different, more snow staying and piling up than for many years. If a little more piles up we’d be pushing design limits for the area. The upgrade cost was very small and I told them I didn’t want to worry about the worse winter conditions that all this global warming is going to bring:smt101…besides I’m getting old and don’t want to shovel the stuff.

That's the Woody I know. Hmmmm, serious huh. I'll remind you when your stinking up the place with your humor, at someone elses expense. Damn spring needs to get here quick. You guys ain't no fun.

Long shot, but might help.

Pier 121 marina on lake lewisville had a covered marina collapse under ice last winter. Lots of boats with serious to totaled damage. The Marinemax dealer in Dallas worked with a lot of the issues. Might be worth a call there to see if they have any insight on sourcing parts, what the experience was.

I am so sorry to hear about your boat... I could only imagine the frustration and pain.
My personal opinion is as followed. I know and understand the attachment, work and dedication to ones vessel. i understand that it is extremely hard to let go of somEthing that you love. But I would try my best to explain to the insurance company that this is a total loss. I would have contractors esTimate the total cost of repair and explain that that number is only an estimate and there could be extensive internal structural damages and that estimate could rise 20-30 %. Take your large insurance check and go buy yourself another untainted vessel. It's not worth the time, aggravation, stress or heartache. Remember its an object and all objects can be replaced with a bigger and or better object. Best of luck to you in whatever you choose to do!

www.sea-rayparts.com Sorry to hear this, is this Brian?

Yes, Jeff? Damn crappy situation but things are moving along. Upgraded HD electronics to start. Damage Reserve is 125k. Normally I'm in water on 4/15. This year I'll be lucky if by Memorial Day. Heading to mystic right now for ride. Take care.

Yes I believe there was. It was right next to me and deflected a lot of the load. Poor guy. He really got damaged.

Post up some pictures. Where are you landing with the fiberglass parts and bridge? Will you just have everything rebuilt? Good opportunity to think about upgrading other areas... Stidd captains chairs? bridge A/C?

First off the marina has insurance. They have cleared roof in past. These are among the first questions I asked when I started storing there five years ago. We had heavy wet snow ontop of previous snow fall and It rained a bit over that night. The next day (Sunday) at about 2:30 pm the collapsed occurred. At least 7 boats damaged heavily including a big hatteras someone asked about. They dismantled The building using two large excavators with articulating claws. Those guys are contractors of course but they did a fantastic job in minimizing for the damage to the boats contained within the building. For the record my hull insurance is $310,000. I am more than adequately covered but I've been told in order to total the boat it would have to be 70% of that amount in damage. They placed a reserve of $125,000 on the repairs. That's roughly over third and no where's near the amount needed to total the boat. Fortunately the hull was not compromised and a damage was restricted to the bridge. Once I got to the boat and saw that I was truly amazed. I was concerned the hull would've been compromised by the jackstands it rested on but that was not the case. A local fiberglass guy from Mystic named Nick will be be fabricating the radar arch using the old one to create a jig. He's one of the best glass guys around so I'm confident it will look good. Still there's nothing like factory new for a replacement and I'm Upset and that we couldn't find one. I did receive a good lead from a private message that I'm following up on tomorrow so perhaps I will be able to get a factory original arch. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Sea Ray is zero help. I called and they basically told me I'm sol. Fortunately I have good insurance and the marina has really impressed me with their response. It's been 4 weeks and all damage repair has been sourced out. A new arch will be fabricate, new top and entire canvass replacement. New alum tube frame for roof. All new electronic package with HD E120's. New kvh, or rather ramarines version. New railing on aft bridge, seats, upolstery, steering wheel, cameras, etc... Only thing we've yet to find is the trim piece or "visor" which wraps around top of instrument console. I Got some good suggestions from you all including a. PM which I'm using. All-in-all things are moving along pretty good. Again the marina really stepped up and is making things happen. While my home port is Mystic I store at Chrster point inside I a Quonset type buildings. Been there for 5 years. Insurance mailed a check to me last week so I can start paying all the sources. My biggest problem was lack of follow up by the insurance company (AIG) surveyor. He's a local guy. Supposed to work for me. I won't use names but he lacks communication skills to say the least.

Thanks again everyone for your help and support. I'll post a few pics when I have more time. After it was removed from building it didn't look all that bad but they still assessed damage at 125k. that's a relative number considering the electronics alone are probably $50,000. If there's a silver lining to this dark cloud is that I'll get some new updated electronics and an entire new bridge enclosure among other things. I'll post some pictures as soon as I'm able. I'm sure you'll be interested in seeing them. Thanks again everyone.

The Instrument visor... I have some bad news... After working with Sea Ray last summer, I am pretty sure I got the last one in existence that was 'new'. They found it buried in a warehouse. Sea Ray doesn't support parts when boats reach 5 years old, so it does put some of us SOL.

Question -- what kind of shape are your captains chairs in? How are you handling those? I tried to source new skin's for them as ours are pretty worn, but was SOL. Is your dash visor broken? I might have my old one -- just dried and cracked -- but could probably be wrapped or painted? That was my next option if I hadn't sourced a new one. Shoot me a message if needed.

You might ask your fabricators if they can make you a larger covered area on the arch rather than the rigid frame. That frame makes arch access a total pain, and you might be able to get a larger one similar to the newer 44's that had them as an option. If you are going custom, it's worth a try.

Check out this arch and you will see what I mean (stole from yachtworld)

I can't speak for anyone else on this forum, but I can definitely say your experience really reiterated to me the importance of a proper yachtsmen policy and maintaining it during winter layup. And very carefully reading my winter storage contract in regards to damage and acts of God. I pulled mine back out of the files and read through it a more comprehensively than I ever have! Many northern boaters think they can button their boats up in nice heated storage buildings and forget about them all winter. Some of my friends even cancel their policies from Nov-Apr. It's a crappy reminder, but hopefully your experience will help a lot of the members of this forum look into their own coverage and storage contracts.

They helm pedestal seats are both in tact and undamaged although they did bear some weight. I feared that issue about the visor over the dash. The marina knows an upholstery guy who does custom work and they're talking about perhaps manufacturing a custom-made leather stitched visor which they can do from foam and then wrap it. Sounds like a good alternative.

Id be interested in the dash visor. Marina said they were going to have local guy fab one but he could possibly wrap your old one. What do you need for it? Thanks.

Sometimes, being sort of a pack rat pays off! You'll want to check the parts manuals to make sure the dash visor part numbers are interchangeable. You are talking about this, right?
