Looking for recommedations on brands for stainless rod holders. I started looking at Perko, but they are very expensive. I have found some AFI (I think is a division of Marinco), which are less than half the price. Are the AFI's decent quality? Any other brands to consider?

Where are you putting them? On rails or flushmount?

There's also Taco brand rod holders.

Some rail mounts grab better than others, or are more adjustable. It really depends on what you expect to use them for. For a simple fly rod just about any holder would do. For mounting a barbeque grill I found only the heavier duty models grabbed tight enough to the rail to make a secure enough connection.

I am going to flush mount them...and will only be used for a Mamga grill. Is there a " standard" location were they are usually mounted?

Is this what your looking for? This is "Perko" flush mount rod holders. I use this for my Magma grill. Perko also makes the Nav. light holder that Sea Ray uses. (at least on boat they did).

Having bought the West store brand, because the Perko's were twice the price, they pitted in 2 months, and back they went.
Bought the Perko's, and never looked back.
Perko makes allot of Sea Ray hardware.

When installing a rod holder, is the rubber gasket on the bottom sufficient for water sealing or does some caulk need to be used?

I bought mine from the dealer and had them installed flush mount on my 280. I think it cost about $75 each, including installation. They look nice and function perfectly.

Jeff, I emailed the pictures of where ours are mounted. I talked to the tech who put them in and he said he usually uses silicone to bed them, but its not really necessary. The gaskets are pretty thick, and water infiltration (where ours are) isn't any issue. Ours are mounted on non-skid, so a small bit (as bedding) won't hurt.

Reminder from another thread: rod holders don't hold much fuel. :smt021

ROFL!!!! :smt043 Reminds me of the time I tried to fill our freshwater tank only to find out once launched that I had filled the blackwater holding tank. :smt101 Oh well. Live and learn.

As to rod holders we have a pair of Perko's flush-mounted in the top of the gunnel. Holds rods and/or the Magma grill perfectly. In addition, we have a couple of Scotty's bases mounted just below the top of the gunnel on the inside. The rotatable and removable inserts allow us to run two additional rods out to the sides. They work quite well alongside the Perko's.

Todd,

In my case it was just freshwater. Re-read my original post. It was my freshwater tank I was trying to fill originally. The original reference in this thread was re someone mistaking their Perko rod holder for the gas tank.
