i have an 86 seville cuddy...i know its no fishing boat but it works for me. i would like to mount some kind of rod holder in the cabin. are the inside walls of the cabin thick enough to screw into? or will i be risking putting a screw right through the hull. are the walls and the hull one in the same or are they actually 2 different "walls" ..... what i really want to know is how thick are the inside walls?

Don't mean tom tag along on your thread, but last year I bought some velcro rod holders that require a small screw, maybe 1/2" to mount the holders. I was going to mount the holders in the port lounger storage on the wall but was afraid to screw anything into anything.

I don't fish much, but I used to keep the rods on the boat and thought it would be nice to have a place to actually mount the rods.

So along the same lines, I wonder how much depth you have to work with in general, on interiors.

Welcome to the board Dawgs. Do you have bimini poles? If so there are several rod holders that clamp on to the poles.

the hull sides are not thick enough for screws, have a block glassed in if thats where you really want to put them, or thru-bolt them if you dont care about the bolt head on the outside of the boat, but thats a bit ghetto looking.

Dawgs,

Welcome aboard. I want to set up some rod holders for my 30' weekender. I do not want to attach them to the boat directly though. Too much teak and too much time makeing the teak look GOOD! I talked to a fellow boater who has the same setup as I do and I am going to do what he did. He took 2 pieces of 6' 1x6 and attached them with a hinge. Then set them under the teak railing on the stern. Cut out sections to fit under each stantion and screwed the rod holders to the boards. Has suppport from the transom and each side. When he is not fishing, he takes it off and folds it up. I'm going to add some felt under teh boards as not to scratch the gelcoat.

That is the set up I used last year. It works, but puts a lot of stress on the poles when trolling. I bought new trolling rods and I'm afraid I'll bend the bimini poles with these new rods. So I am going to try the above method.

storage

yeah this would be for storage when im not actually using them....how about the roof of the cuddy? how thick is that?

not thick at all, you can forget about just running screws into the boat for that pupose

if there is core in the roof it might appear thick, but that core is balsa core which cant hold a screw for crap.

hhhhmmmm

well since screwing right into the boat is out then i need a few ideas.....im all ears

Why not epoxy decorative teak or mahogany blocks onto the hull, in the cabin, exactly where you need to fasten the rod storage holders?

You could custom make the blocks or use something like standard Rosettes that are typically used in stair construction to fasten a railing to a wall without a post.
