I know this has been posted but I can’t seem to find it. I just got the invoice from my marina and am scared. Over 5k for risers manifolds and elbows for my 2003 5.0 MPI. Does this seem right? See attached picture for breakdown. $450 for bolts?!? I see this same kit with 2 of everything on nuwave for 1700. Please help.

If you can change a tire, you can probably change your own manifolds.

Check out YouTube, I’m sure there’s plenty of videos so you can see what’s involved. Nothing special, just heavy stuff. A second set of hands is a big help.

Yea, that price is way out of hand. Note: The bolts are listed as $45.00 for 10 on that document.

Thanks guys. The job is already done :-/. But talking with them today they already confirmed there are problems with the invoice. Will see what they come back with tomorrow guy said it was going to be closer to 2500 when I had it done but I didn’t get a write up. Dumb. It’s a good reputable marina here and I like them a lot but thats absurd. Hopefully they correct it. Thanks for confirming I am not crazy.

I just ordered two new manifolds for my 7.4 from West Marine and they were about $300 each. My spacers and elbows are fine so I'm going to wire wheel them and paint them with a rattle can of Mercruiser engine paint and reuse them. Gaskets all together were less than $100. The hardest part about changing these items yourself is they weigh around 40lbs. each and most bilge/engine compartments are not known for their spacious accommodations for mechanics to work in. No special tools required either, you'll need a flat head screw driver, socket wrench with extensions and sockets, usually 1/2" & 9/16", and a razor blade and a wire brush to clean the old gasket material off the engine and other surfaces before reinstalling. It only becomes a chore where special tools are needed if bolts get stripped or broken.

That sounds better. I believe I paid around $1700 last Spring for OEM risers, manifolds and elbows, then installed them myself.

2003 manifolds are dry joint and are more expensive than wet joint. The good news is dry joint last longer. Nuwave has manifolds with elbows at 936.00 and the riser kits at 450 so round up to 1500 per engine. I've done many wet and dry joint exhaust for myself and friends and knock on wood never encountered frozen bolts. Twin engine takes about six to seven hours and single engine about five hours due to tight space and old fat guy getting stuck in the bilge. If you do labor rate at 150 x 8=1200 so the whole job single engine 2700 at a marina.

Thanks. I spoke with the marina. They adjusted the cost but it’s still going to be around $4600 (2600 parts, 2000 labor). I should have gotten a clear written quote before they did it. Dumb. Verbally they said I would be at 2800. I would have just done it myself or called my retired dockside friend.

It happens, don’t kick yourself. I was quoted$1200 to fix overheating problem last summer. Parts and labor. Mechanic works at marina and didn’t factor in the marina vig of haulout and storage. I got a bill of $1800. He apologized but it was what it was. He fixed a long running problem so I was happy but live and learn to get it all in writing first.

"And remember folks", even when you get it in writing, there is a big difference between an "estimate" and a "quote".

https://www.consumerprotection.govt...An estimate is a best,the work for that price.

So my 2002 340, 6.2’s have dry joint style manifolds but are fitted with wet joint risers and elbows. The manifolds have the holes plugged. I have the boat 6 years in fresh water, and the po said the strb engine has been newly rebuilt when I bought it.
Should I remove, inspect and convert over to dry joint? Can’t tell what’s factory and whsts not. No issues, just asking.

You don't have dry joint manifolds. You should be fine as is with fresh water.

Are these not dry joint hole fittings (if you look real close)

Strange format for writing the invoice

it whould have been easier if they split it out better (example for the bolts)

Unit Cost = $4.50
Qty = 10
Subtotal = $45.00

No. I misspoke. He raw water is being injected into the manifold. Block is glycol. (half cooled)
