We are planning on going to see the airshow by boat this year. We have reservations at Newport Harbor Hotel on Friday June 10th and Saturday June 11th. The plan is to anchor off Quonset and watch the show on Satruday and Sunday.

If anyone is interested in meeting up with us and rafting for the show we would be glad to have the company. If you are coming from far and need a place to dock, The Newport Harbor hotel has slips available. They have nice facilities with an indoor pool and next to Bowens wharf right in the heart of Newport.

Now a couple of questions for those who have gone to see the show by boat, where is the best place to anchor, north of the airport, south of the airport or right in the middle to the east of the runways? Looks like the runway runs NW to SE so I assume south would be best but I don't have local knowledge of the area.

Is there a dock or place to land with a dingy at the airport to get on land and walk the show?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or local knowledge of this

We go almost every year by boat and typically drop the hook north of the airfield (due East of Calf Pasture Beach). Seems like that's where most people do it.

I'm not sure if there are any areas off limits but I would imagine there are. I've never heard of anyone taking a dinghy ashore so I don't know if it's allowed.

Thanks for the information. I will check out the North area when we go.

Does anyone have any information on whether or not you can go ashore at the airfield?

Cant go near base from water, they keep you out a good distance. The secret spot, get there early, is inside Allen Harbor. Flat calm, some moorings run by the town of North Kingstown. Not sure on mooring fees. Im at QDNYC, in that area. They fly right over my dock.
Allens is North of airstrip, narrow channel, marked pretty well. Outside in the bay you will be rocking and rolling, it gets busy.

Anything in Allen harbor? Plenty of room to anchor for airshow? Just wondering if it's a nice place for a day trip or overnight.

Why why both Days?

I was was the Aviation Supply Officer for the Blues years ago. The show is the same both days. As of a few years ago nothing changed.

Its been decades since ive seen the show in RI. We used to raft up a couple or three boats at a time real early. Enjoy great food, drink and friendship all day and we would all head to Potters Cove for the night. No cabin & bow riders got a place in the cabin cruisers. Great times. Of course....far fewer boats back then too.

You could hit East G first then the cove.

Enjoy.

When I wrote that I was hoping to get ashore and check out the static exhibits as well. In my mind it would be a two day even, one spending most of the day land looking at the planes and one enjoying the show knowing we can go ashore there We may take the boat over on one day and then head over by car another.

OK. Long away and far ago!!! I was the Staff Duty Officer on practice day for the Blues at a place named Cecil Field, FL. AFAIK....it is closed now. I digress. IMHO, the best course of action in your situation is to take in the static display on the first day by road. I believe security will be very tight. The odds of accessing the base by water are slim. After the static, Take in Wickford, East G, maybe Providence and over the Mount Hope back to Newport. If PVD is too far, try Warwick. Iggy's or the place across from it, Top of the Bay. Great food both and a great view of the bay.

On on the second day, take in the show. Catch East G, Haborside has become overrated lately but there are other places there that weren't ther long away and far ago!

Off to Potters Cove and back to Newport that evening or the next day.

BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE LOBSTER POT MARKERS. THEY ARE DAMN NEAR INVISIBLE IN GOOD LIGHT,!!!!!

Have fun!
