Hey Hey,

I am a first time boat owner. I am learning the ropes of owning it and I wanted to get some inside information on whatever wouldnt be intuitive. What I am looking for right now is a gps system. It's a boat i'll be using on a major lake so I don't need international seas level system. Just something that will add a little extra security and is simple enough to use. I've reviewed a few and I'm narrowing down but wanted to hear what people are saying.

I prefer Simrad MFD's, but pretty much any major brand is very good. I have a Simrad NSS7 that I just removed from my boat because I upgraded to a 9". If you are interested I can give you great deal on it...PM me

Thanks sea hare. To be more specific I'm looking for a gps that also gives me a security where I can keep up with my boat when im not around AS WELL AS use it as a naval gps system when I am boating. Like i said I'm on a major lake and there has been thefts which is why I'm a little more sketchy to leaving it for such long periods at a time.

Sully, when you mentioned "GPS" to boaters, we will automatically assume you're referring to a navigation system, not a GPS-enabled vehicle tracking system...

Are you sure you even want that? Tracking systems don't prevent theft. They assist in recovery. By the time you look at a map and see your boat in a place you didn't leave it, it's already been stolen! If I were you, I'd put the money you'd spend for tracking on a better insurance policy.

haha ok i hear you on that. I am between a rock and a hard place being that I'm off of a great lake and only have access to sailable weather about 4-6 months of the year. I've looked at different offering to try to find something that makes sense economically given the little boat time versus overall yearly expense. I feel like im being taken for a ride
