Retirement

Everything is done online, after you complete the online application, they will call you for more information. Miss that call and you go to back of the queue, about a month later. Miss that call, back of the line you go. Happened to me twice. Finally captured the call yesterday.
They didn't have to call me... must have been something with your application P.L.. I did file later than I should have (January wanting payment in February) but it was all settled by March.

You could have made an appointment at your area SS Office, then sit down and get 'er done.

I don’t know where you guys live but in Maryland there are NO appointments allowed. 100% online and phone. Believe me I begged. Not happening.
Surprising to hear this a it is a Federal program. We have two offices within 35 miles of our home in west Michigan. One is just 17 miles away. Parents living in AZ, same thing. What is different about Maryland?

I think when Covid hit they “locked down” The offices to visitors. Not sure if they reopened.

My wife had a similar experience. We have a SS office 7 miles away yet if you want an appointment they give you a phone appointment 4 to 6 weeks out. You can go into the office but could wait in line for hours. She did the phone appointment and signed up in Oct and was going to get benefits going back 6 months. She continuously followed up and for some reason her application got flagged and she needed to go into the office with proof of identity which she did. When she followed up they told her they had tried to call but couldn’t reach her. They might have called but never left a message. She finally got this settled and got her first check last week but at least in our case it seemed like it was harder than it should have been.

Deja Vu!

Odd isn't it that the US seems to need to staff the IRS at around 80,000 new employees but can't staff Social Security to serve retirement, needy, and disabled....

One is to generate more income and weaponize another branch of government. The other serves no real benefit to them except ammo during an election cycle.

According to this they opened up last spring, 'local Social Security offices will restore in-person services, including for people without an appointment, on April 7, 2022.'

But sometimes an office might have issues affecting services available. Here's a list by state that supposedly list status of offices.

Makes sense. I started last February so they were closed when I checked.

Here was last weekend when we visited. Not much to see yet. That's the walkout lower level and the upper level start. The post/beam stuff happens this week and supports the front and rear upper faces.

For those that like construction pictures, here is an update of our place from our visit yesterday. This is the view from the lake side. We lost a bit of time due to that cold snap and the related snow, but the weather has gotten warmer again so they are at it again. The post and beam design takes a lot more time to get the structural framing done, which is frustrating to wait for. We are right on open water Georgian Bay so winter winds slow/stop progress too because they can't work on the high scaffolding and ladders in high winds. Oh well.

Very nice. You could have also posted this in the "OSHA has ruined everything" thread.

Blindsided this morning. After 28 years with the railroad I was informed that on 9/7/22 my position is eliminated. Strange it’s 1 week to the day after I turn 70. 1 of 135.
On the positive, they will continue my salary and benefits to 9/7/23. And still get the bonus in the spring. Then between railroad retirement and pension I will collect almost as much as working.
I was not expecting this and I am in shock. I have 6 weeks vacation to burn by September so there is that too.
I don’t know what I am going to do everyday. I never contemplated retirement, thought I’d work forever.
The boat will keep me busy thru then but it’s going to be a bad winter with nothing to do.
I never expected this. It’s going to be different.
So @Pirate Lady now that you're 2/3s of the way through winter and 5 months into retirement have your thoughts changed? Has it been a "bad winter"?

Looks great! Although I'm having a hard time getting my head around the concept of retiring in a cold weather climate.
