What is your opinion on the new green dot, grey dot, black dot, red dot reputation system?

Do you feel it’s the best thing since Jesus said “Take the boat out” Matthew 14:22

Or do you feel the rating system is about as dumb as buying a boat as a financial investment.

What’s your opinion of the colored dot reputation system?

Update: The system never took me to a poll creation page when I hit submit so simply reply below.

For anyone that wants to Dump it is not that hard for you to accomplish your goals. Go to usercp, click edit options, click something that says basically use invisible mode and there you have dumped the reputation points thingy. For those that like it, continue to enjoy it.

I think it is a commendable idea, but it seems to lack a fundamental requirement of valuation systems,i.e. a consistent measurement criteria.

In the CSR rules thread the process was called a 'popularity contest'. Ignoring images of high school cliques that the term invokes, the fact is a metric based solely on a popular vote criterion is by definition a 'popularity contest'. I'm not sure what that brings to the table.

It is clear after a little reading that some of the people on CSR are helpful, some people can be helpful and a bit caustic, and others are just plain funny (the various pictures of bunnies w/pancakes on head come to mind). So how does one measure a reputation vote made because a post was funny, caustic, or helpful?

That to me makes the point that the reader still should do his research and evaluate the responses to the questions and take it from there.

So unless CSR wants to create a panel of experts who would bestow ratings to the various contributors, I don't see much value in the reputation system.

As for this being a democracy we should all recognize that it isn't. CSR is hosted by Jim's business and because the conduct here ultimately reflects on Jim's business, we have to recognize his right to impose whatever rule he wants, or exclude any member he wishes.

Although I am still not a fan of the rating system and I personally have disabled mine, I say give it time.

We will find out eventually if it is serving the right purpose. If too many green blocks (or whatever happens after that) start showing up next to folks who don't really deserve them, or not enough blocks next to those who really do deserve them, then it will be obvious it's not working the way it was intended. But if the real experts and folks who help out others all the time start getting the credit they deserve, then we will all have to admit it is probably serving it's intended purpose.

It really isn't a big deal to me either way, but I do believe in time guys like Skip and Frank etc will work their way out of the initial morass of idiocy and their rankings will reflect their knowledge base. I think the key to such a system is clear guidance that the system isn't a "hey, good joke" such of system or "hey, you're my buddy" system and rather a "he gave me great advice that helped me work through a problem" system.

    Wait...

    A boat inst a financial investment? Damn!!!:smt021:smt021:smt021

    Sorry kids...no college for you.

As far as the rep, it's pretty obvious to anyone with half an orange to know through common sense which members here are knowledgeable, and with the exception of only a couple of posts here, it seems to me that each and every member has something to contribute one way or another.

I have had nothing but good advice from everyone so far.

Ignoring it is much more fun :)

You get the benefit of knowing what others think of you and still maintain your aloofness to the bruhaha.

Keep it, ditch it, the only real impact on me and my participation is that it ups my post count.... damn... if post count is replaced by Reputation.....

    All in good fun!

So.. If Bill takes a shot at Wes in a thread, I might boost Bill's rating because I think it was funnier than a bunny with a pancake on its head, while Wes might nuke Bill's rating for taking a shot at him in that same thread.

Looks like an "eye of the beholder" type of thing.

Wasnt me. I have NOT given anyone any bad rep yet (which I am sure Jim could see if I or anyone is lying), and never plan to do so for any other reason than if they just give bad advice that is blatantly, obviously bad advice specifically for boating.

I will never give a bad rep for pot shots or posts in bad taste, or threads etc.

Sonmeone gave me bad rep points just for posting what they considered a thread that doesnt belong on CSR's holding tank...to me, that is the WRONG usage of bad rep points. THis is the only reason I am neutral on it and not in favor... just beacuse someone doesnt like a thread or uses the rep as a moral compass of some kind.

I think it should stay....not so much for giving someone a low rating...but for giving Kudo's for someone who actually takes the time to research something for someone else or post pictures of a project.

I didn't think the site needed this. I think it becomes pretty obvious that pretty much all advice given here is good. What worked for some, may not for others. Some here have many years experience, some not so much.

the thing i like here is that there is a wealth of information, lots of encouragement to be hands on, and plenty of joking! Yes, It can get a little too serious at times, but that's o.k.

I can take it or leave it. I agree most can soon figure out who provides the levelheaded, to the point responses. I am on another sporting site board that has done this for quite awhile and as Wes ( I believe it was) stated, the novelty of it wears off and it settles down to actually doing as intended (for the most part.. there are always those that jest, etc.. a lot of posters will actually state in the thread that they are giving negative spek or here's some positive spek for ya )

So put me down as a 'keep it' for now.
